William Regal planned for a year off after his WWE release, but Bryan Danielson convinced him to join AEW. Also, going forward, the Stadium Stampede Match looks to be finished. 

Who Convinced William Regal To Join AEW?

When WWE released William Regal, it ended a lengthy run with the same promotion. After decades with WCW and WWE, Regal was ready for a well-deserved break.

Then, he received a call from a familiar student and friend, Bryan Danielson. Instead, on AEW Unrestricted, Regal noted how Danielson talked him into joining AEW.

“I had a great run and I’m going to take maybe a year off except for, I was thinking about this time, I would start looking for the odd things in the UK,” said Regal. “Just so I could go and see my family and go home for a bit.”

“Then, I get a call from Bryan Danielson. It sounded very exciting, just to go back and be talent, basically.”

“The reason I ended up with the job before is I know Bryan and all these people, is because I will always be at the ring showing people stuff and I got to know a lot of people over the years because people did that for me in Britain.” 

“Once they realized I wasn’t going anywhere, I couldn’t have any better wrestlers take me under their wing They teach me and show me and put me into places. I felt that was part of my…if I don’t do that, I’m not leaving this job in the right way.”

Regal debuted at the Revolution pay per view. After Jon Moxley defeated Danielson, there was tension. Regal smacked sense into them and they shook hands.

He now manages them in a group called Blackpool Combat Club. 

Gimmick Match Gone

At the hight of the pandemic, AEW had to get creative with some matches. They had limited or no fans, so they let their imagine run.

Therefore, fans witnessed the first-ever Stadium Stampede Match and the Blood & Guts Match. Tony Khan spoke with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi and noted the future of the Stadium Stampede Match is likely over.

“It’s a very different wrestling world now than it was during the pandemic,” said Khan. “I think it’s a great match, a signature match for us that people really enjoyed.” 

“But, some of the reasons we presented that match were because of the challenges that existed in the world because of the pandemic, as far as presenting sporting events with live fans. That doesn’t really exist in this live-event pandemic.”

As for a Blood & Guts Match, Khan is looking for a summer return for that gimmick.

As fans return to buildings, pro wrestling is finally returning to what is once was before the pandemic.
