John Wayne’s Daughters Hit Back When Cancel Culture Renews Push To Destroy His Legacy

Over the past few weeks, John Wayne became the target of cancel culture after a 1971 interview he did with Playboy Magazine resurfaced yet again. Liberals continue to dredge up remarks made by the Hollywood legend nearly 50 years ago. Now, John Wayne’s daughters are speaking out to defend their father and his legacy.

John Wayne’s 1971 Playboy Interview

Fox News reported that radical leftists have been on a mission to “cancel” Wayne, who died in 1979, ever since one Playboy interview with him resurfaced in which he made some controversial comments about race and morality.

“I believe in white supremacy until the Blacks are educated to a point of responsibility,” Wayne said at the time. “I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.”

Wayne also said he had no remorse for the subjugation of Native Americans, and that he felt that movies like Easy Rider and Midnight Cowboy were perverted.

His daughters Marisa and Aissa Wayne, however, do not feel that their father’s character should be judged solely from this interview, as they do not believe it is indicative of who he was as a person.

John Wayne’s Daughters Defends Their Iconic Dad

John Wayne’s daughter Marisa took a veiled jab at liberals and their intolerance for differing opinions when approached about her father’s reputation.

“He definitely had his opinions, but he respected you if you disagreed with him,” Marisa told Closer Weekly for the publication’s latest issue.

Respecting another individual for having an opinion that might differ from yours? Blasphemy.

“He had an ability to see both sides of the story,” Marissa added. That way of thinking is also a bit old school and not so culturally appropriate in 2020.

Aissa agreed, adding that Wayne “loved people” and was always a  “people person.”

“He cared about his fellow human beings,” she said. “I think that really was a big feature about him.”

Cancel Culture Works To Erase A Legend

Sadly, there are plenty of people who don’t agree with John Wayne’s children.

Earlier this year, the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts agreed to remove a tribute to the Duke after months of protests from outraged students and faculty alike.

There is also a movement to rename John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. And another to remove a statue of the Hollywood star that is out front of it.

While cancel culture has not been successful in making this happen yet, it seems like it’s only a matter of time with today’s climate.

Wayne’s children, however, won’t let their father be cancelled without a fight. The legend’s son Ethan released a statement of his own to defend his dad and his legacy:

“Let me make one thing clear — John Wayne was not a racist. Those who knew him knew he judged everyone as an individual and believed everyone deserved an equal opportunity.

He called out bigotry when he saw it. He hired and worked with people of all races, creeds and sexual orientations. John Wayne stood for the very best for all of us — a society that doesn’t discriminate against anyone seeking the American dream.”

Throughout his career, John Wayne brought joy to millions of people with his various Hollywood roles, which included many Western films.

It’s sad that cancel culture is trying to erase him, and destroy what he means to the legions of fans who still love him to this day.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
