Oprah Speaks in Interview About the Possibility of a Presidential Run

With the 2020 Democratic field getting packed like a sardine can, á la the GOP in 2016, and not a clear front-runner in the bunch (Joe Biden hasn’t declared his candidacy — yet) it’s no wonder another high profile billionaire would be floated as a possible contender to take on Donald Trump.

Enter Oprah Winfrey — or, as we all know her, just Oprah.

The possibility that Oprah may take a run at the White House has been hinted at in the past, even by those close to the media super-mogul. Oprah’s longtime best friend Gayle King said she thought Oprah should run for president and be great at it.

Oprah says she sees her role in politics clearly.

In a recent interview on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” Oprah told the show’s South African host Trevor Noah that she loves her life too much to make running for president appealing.

“Is Oprah Winfrey running for president?” Trevor Noah asked.

“You don’t even want that to happen,” Winfrey replied.

“Why would you say that?” Noah replied.

“I know my path and my path isn’t that,” she went on to say. “But whenever I decide whoever I want to support, I will get behind that person.”

Oprah didn’t endorse anyone for president before 2008 when she swung her influence behind a then young, Chicago pol named Barack Obama — and it helped catapult him past Hillary Clinton to secure the Democratic nomination. Oprah is clearly intending to pick a horse in the Democratic field for 2020. It will be interesting to see if she’ll back one of the many minority candidates, like Kamala Harris or Cory Booker, or get behind the Obama-esque, feel-good empty suit of Beto O’Rourke.

As we know, people who ultimately become presidential candidates say they won’t run. So, maybe an Oprah bid is still a possibility.
