Fans of historical dramas, you’re in for a treat. A new one is finally ready to stream, and it’s earned an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score. Here is everything we know about Washington Black on Hulu.

The limited series, developed by Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, is based on the book sharing the same name by Esi Edugyan. “The book is written in Wash’s first-person, recollection voice,” Hinds said in May 2025 when talking about the adaptation. “When I first read the book and started thinking about how to adapt it, the structure that I really thought about was The Canterbury Tales and his voyage of this boy who becomes a man through all these characters who affect him and who he affects.”

So, what is Washington Black about? The story follows George Washington “Wash” Black, played by Ernest Kingsley Jr. in the show, an escaped Barbados salve with a cleverly scientific mind.

Harrowing incidents force him to flee, and he is thrust into an adventure that challenges and reshapes his understanding of family, love, and freedom. Wash finds the courage to imagine a future beyond the confines of the world he was born into. Watch the trailer below for more details.
The series debuted on July 23, 2025, on Hulu, and it has a shocking critic rating. Based on nine reviews upon release, it scored a critic rating of 100%. Of course, the score will change over the next few days. And since there are fewer than 50 audience reviews, there is no rating yet. Even so, the series is off to an exciting start.
