If you’re in search of a new historical drama series to watch, then get ready for this upcoming release. Here’s everything you need to know about Chief of War, including what it’s about, where to stream it, and when it releases.
After concluding Apple TV’s first original series See, which was a post-apocalyptic science fiction drama starring Jason Momoa, the actor is back on the platform with another series. The streaming platform dropped a teaser of what the show is about, and fans are beyond excited.
Referred to as a ‘passion project’ for co-creators Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbet (who both share native Hawaiian heritage), Chief of War takes viewers back to the late 18th century to tell the story of the unification and colonisation of Hawai’i from the indigenous point of view.
Sibbett recently told GQ that “Jason and I, we actually had this idea a good 10 years ago.”
Momoa also noted that he wanted to wait until he was a certain point in his career before taking on this project, saying “This is my Braveheart, this is my Last of the Mohicans — when i was a little kid, I looked at all these Native American movies and I love samurai movies and I love all these cultures, and so this is it for us. This is our chance.”
Apple shared a brief synopsis, saying Chief of War: “Set amidst the beautiful backdrop of the islands of Hawai’i, the nine-episode series is based on true events and follows warrior Ka’iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century.”
The cast is predominantly Polynesian, with an ensemble cast also including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, and Te Kohe Tuhaka.
The mini series is scheduled to release on August 1st in 2025, concluding on September 19th.
