Memorial Day is not about cookouts and the beginning of summer. It’s a day we commemorate, honor, and remember those who lost their lives in service to our country in the armed forces. For those of us who had a family member make the ultimate sacrifice, it is a day that will forever be sacred.

Tim McGraw understands this sacrifice. The country singer’s song “If You’re Reading This” exemplifies this sacrifice well. It’s about a letter a soldier writes to his family that they will only read if he dies during his deployment. It’s not a letter anyone wants to write and certainly isn’t a letter anyone wants to receive. But, it is a reality for our military families.

This song is sobering, but it’s inspirational as well. The soldier killed in action and his wife are expecting a daughter who will never meet her father. This soldier doesn’t regret anything as he fought for something he believes in. The song even addresses the widow someday moving on to another relationship.

McGraw does a great job of explaining the sacrifice of those killed in action and the hopes they likely had for their families after their deaths. Patriotic Americans will love the video below. It’s bittersweet as it honors the sacrifice and burdens that these families experience. It even ends with a banner showing families of fallen heroes.

WATCH:

We can never honor these soldiers or their families enough. The families will carry the burden and pain of losing their soldier for the rest of their lives. We are forever indebted to them and the sacrifices they made for our freedoms. We are free because of sacrifices of men and women who put on the uniforms of our military.

This is what Memorial Day is about.

Share this to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country!
