The sea holds many mysteries. We still don’t know all the creatures that call our oceans home.
An Australian woman recently discovered a sea creature washed up on shore that she didn’t recognize. And it appears nobody else can figure out what it is either!
Sherry Simmons happened upon this sea creature while walking her dog on a Mulambin beach in Queensland. Initially, she thought it was a piece of wood, but as she got closer, it was clear that it was an animal of some sort.
“As I got closer I realized it was some sort of creature. I poked it with a stick and it was soft to the touch,” Simmons said. “There is a small fin, but the weird part is that there were no eyes anywhere. It looked really heavy.”
She spent a short while trying to figure out what this was, but she couldn’t invest a lot of time because she had her French Bulldog named Tank with her.
“As you can see it is strange looking – if you look down at the thick end, you will see what looks like a leg,” she said. “But if you follow it back into the water it looks like a fin. Other than that there were little to no features evident.”
She thought perhaps it was a dugong and contacted Gold Coast’s marine park, Sea World about it. Sea World said she could be correct, but scientists at Queensland’s environment department don’t believe that is the case. They think it may be a shark’s liver or something else. A dugong also has eyes while it appears this creature did not.
We can meet the dugong that is a model for the legends of mermaids at Toba Aquarium! Their skins were highly prized. Also, their meat is said to make us immortal, and their tears have an effect on the success of love.

The sea creature must have been swept back out to sea as it was gone when scientists arrived. They are not sure what the creature is, but they are guessing it was a marine mammal of some sort.
