Jurassic World Rebirth Review – Breaking Down Plot, Setting, Characters
Plot

The film is set in 2027, which is prefaced at the beginning of the film, highlighting events from 2010. During this time, scientists on the Île Saint-Hubert in the Atlantic are creating genetically modified dinosaurs. This includes a six-legged “Distortus Rex,” or “D-Rex,” that accidentally escapes containment and kills a researcher, shutting down the island.
This prefaces the main plot of the film, as a group of specialists aim to head to the island and retrieve blood samples from the three biggest dinosaurs to create. a drug that prevents heart disease. Unfortunately, the whole crew doesn’t know about the modified dinosaurs, and they and a group of civilians are in for a rude awakening.
I really enjoyed the plot. Many of the past films (at least the first few) primarily focused on the park aspect, rather than their genetics. Plus, having to get samples from the biggest dinosaurs on land, water, and air gives viewers an instant variety of dinosaurs being encountered.
I think the best part is the crew not knowing about the genetically modified dinosaurs until later, as they raise the stakes even more for those fighting to stay alive.
I would have loved to see a little more depth into the idea of the genetically modified dinosaurs, and specifically what pieces made them. However, that’s me nerding out a little and wouldn’t have worked in the movie pacing.
The plot does seem kind of open at the end, so I hope they continue the storyline with bringing the samples to the world and how that goes positively or negatively.

Setting

While viewers start in New York City, the main setting of Jurassic World Rebirth is the island of Île Saint-Hubert. The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean near the equator. This is the only spot where the dinosaurs can truly survive, as the climate is similar.
Calling back to the original few movies, the island is inhabited by dinosaurs, surrounded by lush greenery, with an abandoned lodging/work site somewhere on the island. I thought the setting worked well for the film.
There was this feeling of an uncharted island with danger around every corner, and the solace of the laboratory, which quickly turned into horror as the survivors were faced with the genetically modified dinosaurs.
I did want to know a little more about the island before it shut down, but again, it didn’t need to be included for the main plot.

Characters

The characters were super interesting in this film. While nothing compares to Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler, new depth and stakes improved the ensemble.
Zora Bennett is reeling after her last mission and is shouldering the pain of missing her mother’s funeral. Dalton Kincaid is hurting over the loss of his son, which caused a divorce with his wife. Dr. Henry Loomis is trying to find solid ground after his dinosaur exhibit is shutting down, and he may be out of a job.
Each character has personal issues they are struggling with. This only enhances the characters and makes me want to root for them more.
My favorite characters were Zora and Henry. I enjoyed their dynamic together, and I think they could be present in future films. My favorite scene with them is when they were getting the land dinosaur sample. The moment Henry touched the dinosaur and started to cry is emotionally charged. I loved every second of that.

Jurassic World Rebirth Review: Final Thoughts
I think this new addition to the Jurassic franchise holds up well to both the original trilogy and the more recent trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed the aspect of finding dinosaurs to use their blood for medicine, and how that might prompt overzealous companies to risk everything.
Plus, the fact that genetically modified dinosaurs are “too scary” is ironic. Visitors were supposed to love them, and instead they are hidden from the world.
I would have loved to see more dinosaurs that were present on the island, or a further description of the modified dinosaurs, but overall, this movie was a scary yet entrancing revival of a beloved franchise.
