Earlier this year, we reported that Rosie O’Donnell had fled the United States to move to Ireland. Now, O’Donnell is opening up about the real reason that she fled America to move abroad.
O’Donnell Reveals Why She Fled America
While being interviewed by the former CNN host Chris Cuomo, O’Donnell admitted that she fled the country because of Donald Trump’s presidential victory. She claimed that this was a move of “self-preservation,” as she greatly struggled during Trump’s first presidency.
“During his first go-round, it was very difficult, and I got myself into some bad places,” said O’Donnell, 63. “You know, I was very, very depressed. I was overeating, I was overdrinking. I was so depressed, Chris.”
O’Donnell went on to say that she was hurt that Americans “believed the lies” of Trump. She added that she worked in a business that “sells those lies for profit.”
O’Donnell explained that she also left America so that she could be a “good parent” to her 12-year-old child Clay.
“Coming to Ireland was totally a way to take care of myself and my non-binary autistic child, who’s going to need services and help and counseling and all the things that he’s [Trump is] threatening to cut in his horrible plan of the big, beautiful bill,” she claimed.
Later in the interview, O’Donnell said that one of the things she likes about Ireland is that people don’t approach celebrities there like they do in the states. She contrasted this with America, where she alleges she and her child were cursed at in a CVS after Trump’s 2024 presidential win.
“One cursed at us, and she’s like, ‘Why are they cursing at us?’ And I’m like ‘Honey you know the bad guy? They’re all bad guys too,'” she claimed.

O’Donnell Reveals Her Ireland Move
O’Donnell moved to Ireland with Clay back in January. She shocked the world when she revealed this two months later.
“It’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say. The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming,” O’Donnell said in a video posted to TikTok back in March. “And I’m very grateful.”
“I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child,” she continued. “And here we are.”

O’Donnell Has No Regrets
Last month, O’Donnell revealed that she has no regrets about making this move.
“Never, for one moment since I arrived here, did I regret my choice,” O’Donnell told Variety. “People have been so welcoming, so accepting, and they have a different view of celebrity in the culture here. They are not prioritized over other people.”
“People are much more friendly and intimate with each other in a real way,” she added. “Every time I go into the pharmacy, I fall in love, because the pharmacist talks to you. Have you ever spoken to a pharmacist at CVS?”
“I call my friends every time, going, ‘I think the pharmacist has a crush on me,'” O’Donnell concluded. “But it’s a beautiful way of life. The smallness of this nation fits me very well.”
O’Donnell is clearly still in the honeymoon phase when it comes to her move to Ireland. Only time will tell if she actually stays there!
