Back in February, we reported that CBS had officially green-lit a spinoff of the hit show Blue Bloods. It is set to be called Boston Blue, and it will star the former Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg. Indeed, the new series will follow his character of Danny Reagan as he takes a position with the Boston PD.
Now, Blue Bloods fans are rejoicing as it’s been revealed that one major cast member from the original show will be joining Wahlberg in the spinoff’s premiere episode.
Bridget Moynahan Returning For Boston Blue
Bridget Moynahan played Erin Reagan on 293 episodes of Blue Bloods from 2010 until it ended in December of 2024. On Friday, CBS announced that Moynahan will be reprising her role of Erin in the premiere episode of Boston Blue this fall. On top of that, Moynahan will be directing an episode of the spinoff’s first season.
“Reunited and it feels so good!” Wahlberg, 55, wrote on Instagram alongside a selfie of him smiling with Moynahan, 54, on the set of Boston Blue.
“So excited to have my dear friend, and TV sister @bridgetmoynahan, join me for a special guest appearance in the premiere episode of #BostonBlue!” he continued. “She’ll also be bringing her incredible directing talents to the show this season!”
Wahlberg ended his post by saying that there are even “more fun (and surprises) to come. Let’s go! 💙❤️”
Like most of the cast of Blue Bloods, Moynahan had a hard time with the show ending.
“I think it’s more saying goodbye to the people behind the characters,” Moynahan said weeks before they wrapped filming on Blue Bloods. “We’ve created such a family on set with each other and the crew — most of the crew’s been with us for 14 years, so we’ve been through a lot of weddings, births, deaths, and everything. We’ve been through it all with each other.”
Moynahan went on to praise Wahlberg as her “biggest supporter” on set, and he said she’s “phenomenal.”

Wahlberg Teases Boston Blue
Wahlberg and Moynahan starred in the original Blue Bloods alongside the legendary Tom Selleck, 80. Aside from Wahlberg and Moynahan, nobody else from the original series has been confirmed to star in Boston Blue. However, Wahlberg has teased that his former co-stars will indeed be making appearances.
“New York and Boston are really close,” Wahlberg told Parade last month. “They’re not that far apart. I like the way you asked the question. You covered a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us.”
“Yeah, Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me, it’s important to Sonequa [Martin-Green, Danny’s new partner],” he continued. “She’s a Blue Bloods fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a Blue Bloods fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”
Martin-Green, 40, was previously confirmed to be a cast member on Boston Blue. She is set to portray the character of character Lena Silver, who comes from a prominent law enforcement family.

Fans Want Selleck To Return For Boston Blue
Fans are particularly hopeful that Selleck will be reprising his role of the NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Boston Blue. Insiders revealed last month that Wahlberg was fighting for Tom to be included in the show.
“Donnie is an old-school loyal guy, he’s going to fight for Tom to get a piece of the action,” a source told Closer Weekly. “He and Tom are still very close, they talk all the time and Donnie is well aware that Tom was not happy about Blue Bloods getting canceled.”
“Tom isn’t leaning on him or demanding anything of him, he’s got a movie in the works and is way too proud to beg,” the insider added. “But Donnie wants to do this for him, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because he loves working with Tom.”
Wahlberg ‘Confident’ That Selleck Will Return
The source went on to say that Donnie is “confident” that he can get Tom on Boston Blue.
“They have such a special bond, it really is a family feeling and Donnie misses seeing him,” the insider concluded. “He is feeling confident he can make it happen because the fans would love it as well. Even if Tom isn’t a full-time character, he can at least pop in and out for regular cameos, that would probably be a good fit for him at this point in life anyway.”

Blue Bloods was one of the few shows on television that celebrated both law enforcement and family values. This sadly made it a rarity in today’s television landscape. Fans are eagerly hoping that Boston Blue will fill the void that has been left in Blue Bloods’ absence.
It’s incredibly exciting that Moynahan will be appearing on Boston Blue. Here’s hoping that more Blue Bloods cast members, including Selleck, will have the chance to do the same thing.
Boston Blue is set to premiere on Friday, October 17 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. If you love Blue Bloods as much as we do, be sure to check it out!
