It’s been two months since the hit show Blue Bloods aired its final episode after CBS inexplicably cancelled the show after its fourteen successful season.
Now, however, Blue Bloods fans have a reason to celebrate. Indeed, CBS has confirmed that a Blue Bloods spinoff is officially happening!
Blue Bloods Spinoff
The Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue has been given a straight-to-series order at CBS. The new show will follow Donnie Wahlberg’s character Danny Reagan as he moves to a new position. He will reportedly be leaving New York to join the Boston PD, where he will be partnered with Detective Lena Peters, “the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”
Call it a Tale of Two Cities! Well, and a tale of two families.
Boston Blue was not initially meant to be a Blue Bloods spinoff. When CBS executives saw the script, however, they immediately thought of Wahlberg, as he was born and raised in Boston. From there, the CBS higher-ups figured that this was the perfect opportunity to expand the Blue Bloods universe.
This especially makes sense when you consider Wahlberg, 55, and the rest of the Blue Bloods cast, which included the legendary Tom Selleck, were outspoken about wanting the show to continue.
Back in December, Wahlberg admitted that he wasn’t sure how a spinoff would work for his character without the rest of the Reagan family.
“It’s going to be a very delicate dance to keep that integrity. Where’s the family going to be? They can’t be in New York. I would probably drive to New York from Ohio, if I was Danny, to go to every dinner and back,” Wahlberg told Variety at the time.
“Until we know that there’s absolutely no way this show can be resurrected somehow, I think we’re all walking forward… but taking a peek back,” he added.
So far, the idea sounds like a good one.

Will Selleck Be In The Spinoff?
It is unknown at this time if Selleck, 80, will be taking part in this Blue Bloods spinoff. However, he will likely be interested. Indeed, Selleck has been practically begging CBS to find him a new series in the wake of the Blue Bloods cancellation.
“Even as Blue Bloods winds down, Tom is already telling CBS to find a new series vehicle for him,” a source told Closer Weekly at the end of December. “The good news is that they’re very receptive to the idea and, as a network, CBS specializes in programming to the older demographic that has followed Tom since his Magnum P.I. days.”
Selleck and Wahlberg starred on Blue Bloods for 293 episodes. Other Blue Bloods stars included Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Vanessa Ray, and Len Cariou. The show went out on top, with the series finale earning a season-high 6.68 million viewers in Live+Same Day ratings. This was a 15 percent increase over the season-to-date Live+Same Day viewership average, and proof of the show’s enduring popularity.
No wonder CBS is so eager for a Blue Bloods spinoff!
Selleck Wants To Keep Working
“Listen, the only reason Blue Bloods is going away is because, overall, the show had become quite expensive, with a lot of cast and producers that need to be paid,” the source continued.
“Putting Tom in a show with a smaller ensemble makes more business sense and make no mistake, Tom wants to keep making TV shows into his 80s and he absolutely hates the idea of retiring any time soon,” the insider concluded.
Boston Blue is set to premiere in the 2025-2026 television season. We can’t wait to see this Blue Bloods spinoff when it finally comes out!
