Back in February, we reported that CBS had officially green-lit a spinoff of the hit show Blue Bloods. It is set to be called Boston Blue, and it will star the former Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg. Indeed, the new series will follow his character of Danny Reagan as he takes a position with the Boston PD.

In the months since then, many fans have wondered if the Blue Bloods star Tom Selleck would be reprising his iconic character of NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan in Boston Blue. Now, Wahlberg is finally addressing whether or not Selleck will be appearing in this spinoff.

Wahlberg Talks Selleck And Boston Blue

Blue Bloods, which ran for fourteen seasons from 2010 until December of 2024, was famously set in New York City. In contrast, Boston Blue will be set in (you guessed it) Boston. When asked if Selleck will be appearing in Boston Blue, Wahlberg played it coy. He did so by pointing out the proximity these two cities have to one another.

“New York and Boston are really close,” Wahlberg, 55, told Parade. “They’re not that far apart. I like the way you asked the question. You covered a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us.”

“Yeah, Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me, it’s important to Sonequa [Martin-Green, Danny’s new partner],” he continued. “She’s a Blue Bloods fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a Blue Bloods fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”

Martin-Green, 40, was previously confirmed to be a cast member on Boston Blue. She is set to portray the character of character Lena Silver, who comes from a prominent law enforcement family.

Why Is Danny Reagan In Boston?

Many fans have been wondering what could make Wahlberg’s character of Danny leave his family in New York City to make the move to Boston. For now, Wahlberg is keeping the reason behind this under wraps.

“I can’t give you the exact reason why today, because that would be a big spoiler,” he teased. “But I would say this, as family-oriented as Danny is, he’s also always marched to the beat of his own drum.”

“I think those two things can be true at the same time,” Wahlberg added. “He can march to the beat of his own drum, and it can still be about family.”

Wahlberg Is ‘Going To Fight’ For Selleck

Selleck was left devastated when CBS cancelled Blue Bloods. Earlier this month, insiders said that knowing this, Wahlberg has been fighting to get Selleck on Boston Blue.

“Donnie is an old-school loyal guy, he’s going to fight for Tom to get a piece of the action,” an insider told Closer Weekly. “He and Tom are still very close, they talk all the time and Donnie is well aware that Tom was not happy about Blue Bloods getting canceled.”

“Tom isn’t leaning on him or demanding anything of him, he’s got a movie in the works and is way too proud to beg,” the source continued. “But Donnie wants to do this for him, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because he loves working with Tom.”

The insider went on to say that Wahlberg is “confidant” that he can get Selleck on Boston Blue.

“They have such a special bond, it really is a family feeling and Donnie misses seeing him,” the source concluded. “He is feeling confident he can make it happen because the fans would love it as well. Even if Tom isn’t a full-time character, he can at least pop in and out for regular cameos, that would probably be a good fit for him at this point in life anyway.”

Selleck Is ‘Very Open To Coming Back’

Earlier this year, another source confirmed that Selleck would be open to appearing in Boston Blue.

“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” this insider said back in February. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

Blue Bloods was one of the few shows on television that celebrated both law enforcement and family values. This made it a rarity in today’s television landscape.

Selleck was a huge part of what made Blue Bloods so beloved. If CBS executives are smart, they’ll move heaven and earth to get Selleck on this spinoff. In the end, there’s no doubt that fans would tune in to see Selleck reprise his iconic role of Frank Reagan!
