Back in February, we reported that CBS had officially green-lit a spinoff of the hit show Blue Bloods. It is set to be called Boston Blue, and it will star the former Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg. Now, the rest of the Blue Bloods’ cast’s true thoughts about this spinoff have been revealed.
Wahlberg Was Eager For Blue Bloods Spinoff
Wahlberg, 55, played Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods from its premiere in 2010 until it aired its final episode in December of 2024. One year before that, Wahlberg expressed his hope that Blue Bloods would have the same longevity as Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. That police drama has been airing on NBC since 1999.
“I mean, Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay have been going for gosh, so many years, and we hope to last as long as they have,” Wahlberg told US Weekly in 2023.
“One of the things I’ve done is I try to just stay very present in each episode and take each script that comes my way and say, ‘OK, what’s gonna happen now? You know, what am I doing this week?’” he added. “And kind of find the journey in that particular episode and not get caught up in what’s gonna happen next year, what’s gonna happen in two years.”
Wahlberg went on to say that he was not opposed to a Blue Bloods spinoff. Referring to his and Bridget Moynahan’s characters, he joked, “Danny and Erin become private investigators and move to Hawaii, but that was too close to [Tom Selleck’s iconic 1980s series] Magnum, P.I., so we didn’t want to do that one.”

Wahlberg Gets His Wish
Wahlberg got his wish in February, when CBS announced the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue.
“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue!” Wahlberg wrote on Instagram back in March. “The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall! ?❤️???.”
No other Blue Bloods cast members have been confirmed to be taking part in the spinoff show. However, Wahlberg has indicated that there will at least be some cameos.
“The viewers are saying, ‘How do we keep going with a Blue Bloods spinoff without the whole family?’ And I share that. How do we do that, right?” Wahlberg told Fox News last month. “Now, it’s just Danny going to this new world, but I can’t say a lot about it — but I could say, if he’s a Reagan, it will never be just Danny. There’ll always be a Reagan a phone call away. And the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn’t abandon those traditions.”
Blue Bloods Stars Weigh In
Tom Selleck played NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods. He has made it clear that he’s interested in reprising his role.
“I’m open to suggestions, because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked,” Selleck, 80, told Parade in December. “I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere.”
Vanessa Ray, who played Eddie Reagan on Blue Bloods, is also up for doing Boston Blue.
“I would do anything with these people,” Ray, 43, told TV Insider in October of last year when asked about doing a spinoff. “So, yes, of course. I don’t know what world it would make sense for Eddie to be in a spinoff at all. But if they need to put me in a wig and dye my eyebrows and I’ll play a different character just so I get to hang out with all of them more, then I’ll do it.”
Will Estes played Jamie Reagan on Blue Bloods throughout the entirety of the show’s run. Wahlberg has briefly addressed speculation that Estes will appear in Boston Blue.
“He’d better come visit his big brother,” Wahlberg wrote of Estes on social media.
Finally, there’s Will Hochman, who played Joe Hill on Blue Bloods. Wahlberg contacted him directly on social media, writing, “@willhochman my guy – counting on you to come visit your uncle on screen!”
Hochman was quick to respond, saying, “@donniewahlberg I’m fueling up the Chevelle as we speak!”
Boston Blue is set to premiere sometime this fall. Only time will tell how many Blue Bloods cast-members actually appear in it!
