Dennis Quaid has long been one of the only unapologetically Christian stars in Hollywood. In a new interview, he’s opening up about how his strong Christian faith has helped him through both the good and bad times in life.

Quaid Discusses His Faith

“It has gotten me through hard times. It has gotten me through good times, too,” Quaid, 69, told Fox News. “Good times and gratitude. I lean on God when it comes to the hard times as well. You know, we all need that. It’s something that gives me a lot of joy.”

Quaid went on to say that while he grew up going to Sunday school, he strayed from religion as he got older. It was only after overcoming a cocaine addiction that Quaid found God again.

“[I] read the Bible again, cover to cover, and was really struck by the words of Jesus, and that’s where my personal relationship with Jesus started,” he said. “That’s grown over the years.”

“So, I wrote ‘On My Way to Heaven’, which is the song that I wrote for my mother back in 1990,” he added. “When I got out of cocaine school, as I call it.”

Quaid’s Faith Is ‘Everything’ To Him

Quaid explained that at the time that he wrote that song, he was not relying on God.

“I was relying on other things that didn’t work,” he admitted. “It was the after. Getting clean all of that – that’s where the personal relationship started, and that really does fill up the hole. It’s a great way to live life.”

These days, Quaid thinks it’s incredibly important to talk about faith.

“When you get down to it, it’s everything,” he said. “I think it’s inside all of us that we fill with other things. It’s really important to me. It makes life worthwhile. It explains a lot of things that we don’t have words for.”

Quaid previously credited God with helping him to beat addiction and get his life together in an interview last year.

“I’m grateful to still be here, I’m grateful to be alive really every day,” Quaid told People Magazine. “It’s important to really enjoy your ride in life as much as you can, because there’s a lot of challenges and stuff to knock it down.”

God also plays a huge role in Quaid’s marriage to his wife Laura Savoie, 30, who he married in 2020.

“God is in my wife, and I’s relationship and it’s another thing that I never really had before,” Quaid told Extra last year. “She and I have such a beautiful relationship, and we pray together.”

‘I Talk To God…Every Day’

In another 2023 interview, Quaid admitted that talking about faith is difficult for some people.

“A lot of people are embarrassed to talk about their faith,” he told Variety. “They think it’s some kind of Boy Scout thing, where you’ve got to follow the rules. But I talk to God a lot, every day. I question everything I do. I believe it’s about keeping trying. It’s about self-examination and throwing your ego out the door.”

Bless Quaid for continuing to use his platform to spread the word of God. If only there were more celebrities out there who would do the same!
