We previously reported that the Hollywood star Jeremy Renner, who is best known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel movies, suffered serious injuries when he was crushed by a 14,000 snowcat near his home in Lake Tahoe on New Year’s Day. Now, it’s been revealed that Renner was trying to save his nephew from being hit by the snowcat when the accident occurred.

Renner Saved Nephew’s Life

A redacted Washoe County Sheriff’s Office incident report that was obtained by CNN states that Renner, 52, told police that he’d towed his adult nephew’s truck off of his driveway after it became stuck. All was going well until Renner’s snowplow, a PistenBully snow groomer, began “sliding sideways” and then “began to roll down the hill,” at which time Renner jumped out.

Though Renner was safe at that point, he was horrified to see that his nephew was in the path of the snowplow, so he selflessly took action to save his life.

“Once he was off the Pistenbully, he realized it was heading directly toward (his nephew),” the report states. “He feared the PistenBully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the PistenBully.”

The police report goes on to say that Renner tried to access the snowplow’s cab by climbing onto the moving track, but was “immediately pulled under the left side track.”

“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road,” it continues. “He laid on the ground and focused on his breathing while (his nephew and others) rendered aid to him until medical personnel arrived on scene.”

Investigators Conclude Report

Investigators have not ruled out possible mechanical issues with the plow, as they know that the brake indicator light was not functioning.

“Although the PistenBully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the PistenBully from moving forward,” the report concludes. “When Renner attempted to stop or divert the PistenBully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

Daily Mail reported that Renner was airlifted to the hospital, where he had at least two surgeries and spent the next two weeks recovering. He spoke out last Saturday to express his hopes that his “30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens.”

Renner is the oldest of seven siblings, the youngest of whom was born in 2011. It is unclear which of his siblings is parent to the nephew whose life he saved.

Renner’s Road To Recovery

Friends have said that Renner’s recovery process may take years.

“It’s much worse than anyone knows. Jeremy is very aware of the fact that he almost died out there,” a friend of his recently told RadarOnline. “The right side of Jeremy’s chest was crushed, and his upper torso had collapsed. He also had a bad head wound that was bleeding and a leg injury.”

“Jeremy was in a lot of pain, and was having difficulty breathing,” the insider continued. “He knew he was in bad shape and that he might not make it out of this.”
