Liza Minnelli Reveals What Her Mother Taught Her About Stage Fright

How do you get over stage fright? It helps if your mother is one of the most famous entertainers of all time. Liza Minnelli was thrust into the spotlight at a young age due to her mother’s fame, the iconic Judy Garland.

Here are the two performing together.

Minnelli began performing with her mother at a young age and naturally looked up to Garland. Liza could depend on her star mother to calm her down when they appeared on stage together.

Via Fox:

“You know, other people think of her as Judy Garland. That’s mama. If I get frightened, I’d look at her, and she would somehow know, and she would calm me down. Just by her look.”

What’s Liza Minnelli Up To?

The 75-year-old Academy Award winner is working on a new album of Gershwin covers by country music stars.

I am very intrigued by this. That’s a stellar roster of stars.

As well as a new tour to celebrate what would be her mother’s 100th birthday. Minnelli talks with Jane Pauley about her success and her mother.

While most readers know her from her stints in Cabaret and other musicals, as a bit of a younger person, I was first exposed to her when she played Lucille 2 on Arrested Development. Take a look:

Liza looks and sounds great in that CBS interview. She’s had a long and rough life and to still be able to belt out songs as she has is remarkable.

Other Celebrities Who Suffered Stage Fright

Liza is far from the only well-known performer (or unknown performer for that matter) to battle stage fright.

Stage fright is quite common among performers. This feels paradoxical, but there’s a difference between performing your music in a closed music booth vs. 20,000 screaming fans.

Famous suffers from Glossophobia (the fear of public performance and speaking) include Barbara Streisand, Lady Gaga, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagan.

Harrison Ford isn’t much of a surprise. He is a shy and reserved man if you ever watch his interviews. But this serves his characters, as his brooding facial expressions and quiet rage counterbalance his bursts of energy.
