SmackDown In A Nutshell: Let’s Get The New Season Started!

It's time for another SmackDown In A Nutshell, and like any major sports organization, let's get the new season started in style!

We close out the wrestling week with another SmackDown In A Nutshell! This week…let’s get the new season started!

OK, to be honest, the idea of a season for RAW or SmackDown has always been a bit funny to me…

But, as any legit sports season has a beginning and an end, so to does SmackDown.

With that in mind, let’s ge the new season started, right?

That is the theme of this SmackDown in a Nutshell. Now that the WWE Draft is in the books, it’s all about getting the new season started.

And, with that, we’ve got some interesting things.

First off all, there is the soon-to-be shuffled rosters. The draft kicks in a couple weeks from now, so we have some time on that.

Beyond that, this week sees the return of the King of the Ring…and the addition of the Queen’s Crown.

And, it is worth reminding everyone that things will be building up to…Crown Jewel.

So, let’s get right into it, shall we? It’s time for…

Let’s crack open this Nutshell and get the season started!

Best Match of the night:

As I’ve done before, this one is not going to a match.

Honestly, the best part of the show for me was the Edge-Rollins segment. Just so intense, not much for words, but did what it needed to do.

In the grand scheme of things, I liked this SmackDown, to put it in a nutshell.

Worst match of the night:

Just being blunt here…I expected much more out of Toni Storm versus Zelina Vega.

Mildly surprised that they had Vega going over…but then again, I have to wonder if they might finally have some push for the once-released Superstar.

Odd though, considering not that long ago she was herself losing matches in mere minutes.

Star of the Night

Edge and Seth Rollins.

Spot of the Night:

A few good ones.

In general, hard not to be impressed by Rey Mysterio, who still flies as good as ever.

Also loved the main event action.

Jobber of the Night:

Feels like this was Toni Storm this week.

Upset of the Night:

If you told me before the show that Zelina Vega and Sami Zayn would be two who advanced, I wouldn’t have thought it so.

Considering that Zayn is one who might not be long for the WWE? Definitely a stunner…but I am here for it.

Holy Sh** Moment of the Night:

Probably the arrival of Edge.

Like, you knew he was coming. You don’t have Seth Rollins calling him out at the end of the show if he’s not showing up.

But he came out, looked jacked, got a small taste of revenge as we got the new season started.

And best of all? How he answered Rollins’ challenge.

Not just any match either. Hell in a Cell, presumably at Crown Jewel.

Noteworthy Moment:

So, next week could be quite loaded.

Next week’s SmackDown (and in a nutshell) will be on FS1, due to the baseball playoffs.

And on that show? They are calling it a Supersized SmackDown for a reason.

Brock Lesnar will be present. Also, we have Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks…on top of the apparent return to the ring of Sonya Deville.

Supersized indeed.

Overall lowlights:

I would have liked to see a little more into how the King of the Ring and Queen’s Crown brackets were lined up.

Like, what made them choose those handful of Superstars. Not that I have issue with the ones they went with…but a little more logic or effort and things get even better.

Overall highlights:

While I would rather see King of the Ring (and Queen’s Crown) as the PPV of old…it’s always good to have it back.

Interesting brackets, to be sure…but on both of them, I am sure we can make some guesses about potential final matches too.

After the final bell:

Well, that’s our SmackDown in a Nutshell, isn’t it?

We got the new season started in grand fashion…or close enough.

No Brock Lesnar, but plenty of teasing…and he will be on next week.

Crown Jewel is approaching, and there are two crowns up for grabs along the way.
