Jim Cornette Furious With Darby Allin And Sting Break Spot

Jim Cornette expressed his anger this week towards a break spot involving Darby Allin and Sting. Cornette believes the angle could have been handled very differently.

On his podcast, Jim Cornette complained about the match involving Sting, Darby Allin and Shawn Spears. According to Cornette, several moments were wrongly handled.

Cornette claims the entire match was very “indie.” While we fail to see what is wrong with an “indie” match, let’s have a look at what Cornette had to say.

“It wasn’t a good match that made sense. But it wasn’t funny or extra fake, but it wasn’t as bad as a lot of these are, but it was just an indie match.”

While Cornette had something bad to say about every aspect of the match, he particularly focused on the break spot. During the break spot, Spears wiped off Allin’s face paint.

Cornette also said Spears should have won considering the spot. To top it off, he also said the face paint spot could have been done by FTR instead.

“But why wouldn’t they (FTR) have done to both after the match when they had them both beat down and immobilized. One guy was spike piledriver, the other guy has been double or triple-teamed or whatever and do it there rather than breaking up the match, just for a break spot? Right. That’s the critique I had on that is they did two paint wipings when they could have done one at the end, and you’d remember everything. They wiped the paint off Darby, and then Darby came back and kicked the guy’s a** and beat him. So he got even,”

Is Cornette Right?

Yes and no. Here’s my opinion on the entire match.

I quite enjoyed the bout between Allin and Spears. It wasn’t a squash match and Spears definitely did his heel persona justice.

On the flipside, I do want to see some more serious work for Spears. Maybe a decent feud where he can come out victorious and build his character a bit more.

Moving onto Tully Blanchard and FTR, I thoroughly enjoyed that, too. It certainly opens up a lot more feud possibilities other than Sting versus Blanchard.

Would the face paint spots have made more sense if it were FTR? Possibly, but remember that AEW does not employ an army of writers.

I assume that the face paint spot was all down to Spears’ own creativity. If anything, it intensifies the rivalry between Tully’s faction and Sting.

At the end of the day, I think Cornette is making a big deal out of nothing. The match was solid and so was the feud buildup.

Let’s be honest here, AEW is putting out a better pro wrestling product than WWE has over the past decade. It is easy to criticize, but much harder to compliment.

Wrestling podcasters, especially Cornette, need to get out of this persistent negativity. This is not WWE, and I couldn’t be happier for it.
