SummerSlam 2020 Report Card

Last night we had Takeover XXX and the biggest party of the summer concludes with SummerSlam. After a long two days, let’s get right to the SummerSlam 2020 report card.

WWE SummerSlam 2020 Report Card: Grades Are In!

WWE United States Championship: Apollo Crews vs. MVP

SummerSlam 2020 Report Card

We were supposed to get this match at the last pay per view. Then, the match was scratched during the show as Apollo Crews tested positive for COVID-19.

There was no Bobby Lashley or Shelton Benjamin allowed at ringside. Otherwise, they would have played dividends and possibly allowed a title change.

MVP looked really slow out there compared to the younger Crews. Nothing special and the pre-show was the right call. Grade: C

No DQ Match Where The Loser Leaves WWE: Mandy Rose vs. Sonya Deville

No DQ Match Where The Loser Leaves WWE: Mandy Rose vs. Sonya Deville Originally, we were getting a hair vs. hair match. That got me excited as the gimmick is rarely seen, especially with women. Then, both ladies underwent a scary situation with a deranged person trying to cause real harm. Likely due those circumstances, the match was changed to a loser leaves WWE. Five years of friendship came to a conclusion in a somewhat lackluster affair. They gave it their best, but are far being top caliber superstars. Grade: B-

SmackDown Women’s Championship: Bayley vs. Asuka

SummerSlam 2020 Report Card

In a world where WWE has seemingly done everything, Asuka getting separate title matches in one night is different. First up, Bayley was seeking to make her title reign close to a full year.

Sasha Banks made sure Bayley was able to retain the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Such a concept added another layer to Banks-Asuka.

Overall, one of Bayley’s better matches as champion. Grade: B

RAW Tag Team Championship: The Street Profits vs. Andrade & Angel Garza

SummerSlam 2020 Report Card

Before we get to the match, that was a cool entrance for The Street Profits. The red solo cups falling from the sky was a sight to see.

As for the match, Montez Ford showed he can fly. Considering how the ending came, there is trouble brewing with Andrade and Angel Garza.

Kevin Owens being at ringside had no value. He mentioned Alistair Black’s return for RAW, but that was all he did. Grade: B

RAW Women’s Championship: Sasha Banks vs. Asuka

After failing in the opening contest to capture gold, Asuka got a second chance against Sasha Banks. Like earlier, the leg of Asuka was the focus.

Sick bump on the outside as Asuka hit the ground hard. Unlike the SmackDown Women’s Championship match, Bayley did not help Banks.

Asuka went 1-1 for the night and left with one title. Now, we will have to see if Banks and Bayley are headed for a split. Grade: B+

Street Fight: Dominik Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins came out in WCW style Mysterio attire as Dominik made his in-ring debut 15 years after appearing at SummerSlam. Who would have thought all those years ago how things would play out.

Rollins is a former WWE and Universal Champion, while Dominik has only been in the business for a few years. Good pace from both men and the Mysterio family being there was a nice touch.

Rey is a legend in the business, but his time in the ring is nearing an end. Dominik is no Rey, although he showed lots of potential. Grade: B+

WWE Universal Championship: Braun Strowman vs. “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt

These two have been battling for months, resulting in two transformations. Braun Strowman changed after the Wyatt Family Swap Fight and “The Fiend” seems like a face.

I cannot recall anyone having their way with Strowman or “The Fiend” like at SummerSlam. The match was not long, but it was brutal and full of destruction.

A little shocking we got nothing from Alexa Bliss. Still, “The Fiend” is once again champion; a title he should have never lost.

Oh, and Roman Reigns is back. I’m glad he is back, but not sure where WWE goes from here with all three men. Grade: B+

WWE Championship: Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton

The past eight months has witnessed Randy Orton better than we have seen in a decade. The ‘Legend Killer’ was always a great gimmick and he added many names in 2020.

This looked like the best match on paper and it easily was. The bout was hard-hitting and helped keep people interested after two long days of wrestling.

Drew McIntyre has done a phenomenal job as WWE Champion considering all that has happened around the world. Do not be surprised if Orton captures the belt next week at Payback. Grade: A-
