UFC Norfolk: Deiveson Figueiredo Spoils Joseph Benavidez’s Latest Title Bid

The UFC has some interesting decisions to make following it’s latest card in Norfolk, as Deiveson Figueiredo ensured the flyweight title remains vacant, by putting away Joseph Benavidez.

Round one

Benavidez just missed with a stepping left not long into the fight. Figueiredo caught a sidekick moments later and in the ensuing ground scramble, Figueiredo nearly secured an armbar. Benavidez rolled out and up to his feet and scored with a right not long after. Figueiredo continued to pressure and he planted a right after Joe failed to score a takedown. Benavidez had another TD attempt squashed. Moments later Benavidez came with a hard flurry and tagged Figueiredo with a right hook.  Both men planted some hard shots before the round ended. Great round.

Round two

Benavidez fired big hooks to begin the round but Figueiredo scored with a massive right of his own. Another left from Benavidez landed but the action slowed somewhat 90 seconds in. Moments later, Figueiredo opened up a massive cut over the right eye of Benavidez and then he sent the latter crashing to the deck with a booming right. After landing a few more shots from above the fight was called. Wow. No flyweight title will be awarded since Figueiredo missed weight on Friday.

Replay shows that it was a headbutt that opened the cut above Benavidez’s left eye, right before he was taken out. Unfortunate.

Benavidez was fighting for the flyweight title for the third time tonight, as he was defeated twice before by now-former champ, Demetrious Johnson.
