Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson To Be Put In Conservatorship After Being Diagnosed With Dementia

Brian Wilson, the legendary co-founder of the iconic band The Beach Boys, is reportedly set to be put in a conservatorship amidst his battle with dementia.

Wilson To Be Placed Under A Conservatorship

Daily Mail reported that the Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May ruled on Tuesday that Wilson, 81, requires a court conservatorship after doctors diagnosed him with a “major neurocognitive disorder.”

Wilson’s family and caregivers had requested the conservatorship just under three months ago, citing both his dementia battle and the January death of his wife Melinda, who had been caring for him before she passed away at the age of 77.

“I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” the judge ruled on Thursday.

May went on to explain that the conservatorship is needed because Wilson can no longer effectively make his own medical decisions. Find out more about this in the video below.

Wilson’s Family Wanted Conservatorship

The family told Fox News back in February that “we are confirming that longtime Wilson family representatives LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers will serve as Brian’s co-conservators of the person.”

They went on to say that Wilson “will be able to enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects as well as participate in any activities he chooses.”

Wilson reportedly lives in a house with two of his daughters and a caregiver. The family wanted the conservatorship in part so that “there will be no extreme changes to the household” in which Wilson is living.

While Wilson has some issues with mobility, he can reportedly still get around using a walker. His memory issues have gotten to the point where he allegedly can’t name five of his seven children, though he does still know the names of the two daughters living with him.

Parade reported that Wilson adopted five children with Melinda, who he married in 1995: Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan and Dash. He also shares daughters Wendy and Carnie Wilson, who founded the band Wilson Phillips, with his first wife Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford.

Wilson is “mostly difficult to understand,” and he gives only “very short responses” when he’s spoken to, according to family attorney Robert Frank Cipriano. Check out a recent interview with Wilson’s daughter Carnie below.

Wilson’s History

Wilson founded the Beach Boys back in 1961 with his brothers Carl and Dennis, and they were later joined by their cousin Mike Love and family friend Al Jardine. They would go on to become one of the most successful musical groups of all time, selling over 100 million records worldwide and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Check out Wilson and Jardine reunite a few years ago in the video below.

Wilson has sadly openly struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues for decades, and he was previously placed under a conservatorship for a period of time in the 1990s, according to The New York Post.

Wilson is a true legend and one of the best performers alive today, so it’s particularly devastating to see him go through this. Please say a prayer for Wilson and his family during this difficult time.

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
