Dustin Poirier Says The “Offer is Out” For Nate Diaz Fight

A fight between Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz fell apart in back in 2018. But Poirier is reporting that the UFC’s taken steps to make the fight happen in 2020.

Poirier says an offer is out

Recently Poirier repeated his interest in fighting Diaz. In fact, he offered to fight the latter at 170, since Diaz has been competing at welterweight. Not only that, the former interim lightweight champ said that he’s willing to box Diaz, if that’s what it takes to get him in the ring.

Well, we hadn’t heard much on that front since Poirier made those comments. But, the veteran fighter was on hand in Houston, Texas this past weekend for UFC 247, and Poirier reported the following (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I spoke to Sean (Shelby) last night,” Poirier said while referring to the UFC matchmaker. “I know that they offered him this fight in California in May or International Fight Week, so we’ll see. We’ll see if he takes it, but the offer is out there.”

“I think they told me they were going to give him two weeks. If they didn’t hear, they’re going to move on from it. We’ll see. I don’t know exactly what’s going on with the whole thing.”

So, obviously this is really interesting to hear. The big question is, however, is Diaz interested in taking this fight? Following his stoppage loss to Jorge Masvidal in November (due to a cut), Diaz pushed for an immediate rematch. He also warned that if that doesn’t happen, he could return to the sidelines for a prolonged period of time. So, is a fight with Poirier, who is coming off a submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in September, something that will grab his attention?

Or, even if he’s interested in fighting Poirier, could he turn it down, solely because it doesn’t look like a rematch with Masvidal is going to materialize?

Poirier comments on 2018 fight falling through

When the planned, 2018 bout between Poirier and Diaz fell through, it was initially reported that an injury to Poirier was why. But, while talking about what transpired, Poirier also recently said this:

“Last time was a mess,” Poirier said. “I don’t care what he says, he knows the truth. It was a mess. They were offering me Kevin Lee as a replacement, and it just fell apart. I don’t know. If he says ‘yes,’ I expect him to show up.”

We’ll see what happens. But, unless Diaz has moved on from fighting Masvidal again, we may not see him signing any contracts for a while yet.
