Cancel Culture Meets Christianity Under Fire In Actress’ New Lawsuit

A British actress is suing after being forced to choose between disavowing her Christian beliefs or losing her job. Seyi Omooba was fired from her role in the stage production of “The Color Purple” when she refused to recant a faith-based statement she made online in 2014. Cancel culture is the new norm spurring a rise in anti-Christian and anti-conservative bigotry as celebrities open about their beliefs are blacklisted or shunned. The trend is alarming. And Omooba’s story is just one of many.

“They knew that I was Christian,” Omooba, 25, said in an interview. “And they knew my stance on marriage…On many different things that are in the Bible…The theater and the agency gave me the choice of either losing my career or renouncing my faith. I could not do this, not even to save the career that means to much to me.”

Omooba’s persecution started one day after she landed the role when a co-star she didn’t know dug through her old posts on social media.

In 2014, Omooba wrote on Facebook: “Some Christians have completely misconceived the issue of homosexuality, they have begun to twist the word of God…I do not believe you can be born gay, and I do not believe homosexuality is right.”

Along with her comments she cited the New Testament.

The verses she referenced, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, says, “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

And then Seyi’s post ended with a message of love: “God loves everyone, just because he doesn’t agree with your decisions doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you. Christians we need to step up and love but also tell the truth of God’s word.”

Anti-Christian bigotry

In a tactic that is now standard procedure for the woke crowd, her new colleague tweeted out a screenshot of the post. Adding, “Do you still stand by this post? Or are you happy to remain a hypocrite? Seeing as you’ve now been announced to be playing an LGBTQ character, I think you owe your LGBTQ peers an explanation. Immediately.”

It’s truly amazing that people like Aaron Lee Lambert don’t see the irony in their anti-Christian bigotry.

After all, Omooba knows that as an actress, she’s in an industry that attracts a sexuality-diverse crowd.

When Lambert’s post exploded, Omooba was stunned at the vitriol against her.

“I was quite taken aback,” she said. “People really think I hate them? People were calling me homophobic and then I started getting calls from the producers.”

And as far as anyone knows, Seyi Omooba doesn’t treat people with homosexual preferences any differently. And likely doesn’t believe they should be persecuted by society, either.

But Lambert is clearly the opposite.

Omooba,  was ultimately fired from a role she’s worked hard for.

“I still can’t believe it today. There was this massive opportunity. Something that I never even thought that I’d achieve,” she said.

People like Aaron Lee Lambert engage in the worst sort of ostracization. They want Christian values and anyone who believes in them drummed out. If they don’t have a job, all the better.

He doesn’t want Christians anywhere near him. As a British-born woman of African descent, Omooba’s race and gender in the past would have precluded her from gaining certain status and employment. Today, it’s her personal belief in biblical truths and the nature of homosexuality.

But the London production company that fired her should reflect on the intolerance they engage in.

Blacklisted?

Seyi Omooba says the difficulty she’s faced trying to get cast in a subsequent role is unprecedented. And she says she’s been told by agencies that “homophobia is illegal” and won’t have luck finding work until she renounces her Christian beliefs.

“I didn’t think it would escalate to this, but it has,” she says. “And now I have to deal with it.”

Omooba’s lawsuit stems from not only her firing over her Christian beliefs but a technical aspect in her contract. Despite having a two-months’ termination warning in her contract, she was unceremoniously fired without notice.

Here’s hoping Seyi Omooba’s stand against cancel culture and anti-Christian bigotry opens more people’s eyes to how illiberal and intolerant this dangerous trend is.
