Is Seth Rollins Hurting His Career With Controversial Statements?

Seth Rollins has been a solid fan favorite because of his ability to put on substantial matches and being good on the mic. However, he’s made some controversial statements recently that have fans in an uproar. But, some of the statements have been taken out of context. Let’s take a look.

Seth Rollins Says Critics Are Jealous of His Relationship With Becky Lynch

During an interview with The Tampa Bay TimesSeth Rollins spoke about his relationship with Becky Lynch. When he was asked about the criticism their onscreen relationship has received, Seth had the following to say.

“I think those critics might be a little jealous, I think that’s where a lot of that stems from. I mean, if I’m a dude and I’m watching television, and I have a crush on Becky Lynch, I’m probably not going to be too fond of the guy who’s dating her either so I get that. We have such great chemistry I think it’s funny that people think we don’t. Either way it amuses me.”

When this story was reported, the entire thing was taken out of context. They made it seem like Seth called fans jealous of he and Becky Lynch for no apparent reason. This is not the case as he was solely defending his girl. You cannot really argue with that.

“We’re The New York Yankees”

Seth Rollins also did an interview with Yahoo Sports, in which he compared the WWE with the New York Yankees. He claims the reason why the WWE receives so much criticism is because they are consistently the largest and the best promotion. And are comparable to successful teams such as the New York Yankees and the New England Patriots. While Seth was only defending the company he works for, it’s worth taking a look at his statement.

“We’re the New York Yankees. It’s easy to hate the New England Patriots. We’re those teams, we’re the dynasty. It’s easy to hate us, but we’re still the most popular company in the world at what we do. We’re so far beyond being a wrestling company that it’s very easy to point the finger and hate on us. That’s the cool thing to do, it makes perfect sense to me, it’s how it’s always been in sports and entertainment, you always hate the big guy. It’s fine, I’m not upset about it at all.”

I believe one of my colleagues at Forbes said it best. Contributor Blake Oestriecher states that numbers show the WWE’s performance indicators are down by 14% for Raw and 13% for SmackDown. Live events are also down by 11% and the WWE Network has lost 120,000 subscribers over the past year.

So, at the end of the day, the WWE is not meeting the expectations that have been set for a large wrestling promoter. In short, the product no longer piques the interest of fans. So, Seth can defend his company blindly all he wants but it will do little to make fans tune in again.

Still, if you were working for this company and received a good paycheck, wouldn’t you do the same?
