The women of ABC’s “The View” discussed the media’s failure over the weekend in the aftermath of Native American activist Nathan Philips confronting a group of teen boys from Covington Catholic High School that went viral when the media pounced on what they thought was the reverse situation. When more information came to light, media had to retract — or double down against the boys for other reasons — their original reporting. When asked why it happened, co-host Joy Behar said baldly that it’s because the media “is desperate” for Donald Trump to be booted from office.
Her honesty is as refreshing as it is reprehensible.
“So many people admitted they made snap judgments before all these other facts came in. Why is that? Why do we keep making the same mistake,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked the group.
She continued, “I think that’s the reason. I think the press jumps the gun a lot because we just have so much circumstantial evidence against this guy that we are basically hoping Cohen’s got the goods and what have you and so it’s wishful thinking.”
Excuse me, but that’s pretty pathetic. It’s no wonder the media and Hollywood are trusted so little in 2019. They don’t deserve our trust. Worse, they continually give the American people good reason not to. It’s an untenable relationship in a country with a free and unfettered press. With that right comes the responsibility to be truthful and slow to jump on a story that’s too good to be true.
The fake news narrative came on the heels of another story that has been largely dismissed in which BuzzFeed claimed Pres. Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, was told to lie to Congress by Trump himself. The story was so fallacious, the infamously mum Mueller team actually released a statement saying it was untrue to the most basic facts.
If the media doesn’t want to be called “fake news” they might want to stop making such rushes to judgment just because they don’t like the president.
