It looks like Cain Velasquez’s latest hiatus from the Octagon could end in February, as it’s being reported that talks are ongoing for him to battle Francis Ngannou.
Yes, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani was the first to report that the UFC is working on having Velasquez face Ngannou in the headliner of a February 17th card in Phoenix. If that happens, it will be the first time the former heavyweight champ has fought since 2016, when Velasquez (14-2) took out Travis Browne in the opening round at UFC 200.
The 36-year-old AKA fighter has battled injuries over multiple years now, and has fought just twice since 2013.
Ngannou (12-3) fought just last month, meanwhile, as he quickly put away fellow contender Curtis Blaydes at UFC Beijing. The feared slugger had dropped back-to-back fights to Derrick Lewis and former champ Stipe Miocic heading into that contest.
Here’s hoping this fight gets finalized. Velasquez also recently tweeted out the comment and vid below.
