bioluminescent plankton beach

A rare gift from God! Beachgoers in New South Wales, Australia are getting a very special treat. Water is lighting up electric blue all thanks to an incredible phenomenon.

It’s known as ‘sea sparkle’ or Noctiluca scintillans. The beaches are glowing thanks to the recent warm weather and the sparkling bright blue effect is caused by Bioluminescent Plankton. The tiny blue creatures appear in warmer water and they only glow at night. The light is meant to serve as a defense mechanism to ward off predators from eating the plankton.

Photographer Kris Williams has delighted in the beautiful sight.

“You can scoop the water up in your hands and see the plankton covering your fingers like tiny stars, or swim in the water and watch as the waves light up where you swim through them,” he said. “It really is something magical to see and experience!”

People are flocking to these beaches at night to witness this amazing experience first hand. As beachgoers move through the water, it lights up in a very magical way as you can see in the video below!

This is a pure treat from God and so remarkable to witness this rare gift of nature. The plankton make it appear as if the water is dancing!

It is best to see the electric blue beach when it is darkest, between the hours of midnight and 3 am. It can be a chore to get children awake and out of the house at that hour, but many people feel it is well worth it. In the tweeted video below, people skip and delight in the glowing waters.

Nature can be so amazing! You never really know what you will encounter. Click here to see two women on a canoe that encounter a murmuration of starlings. Thousands of starlings moved together in magnificent fashion over their head in a truly unforgettable way!
