texas teacher rant

It is really challenging being a teacher. This job is made more difficult by the fact that many of today’s parents don’t teach their children respect. These parents are more concerned with being friends with their kids rather than being their parents. This has caused a lot of problems in the classroom and one teacher has had ENOUGH!

Julie Marburger had already made the decision to leave the teaching profession at the end of the year. It had been a lifelong dream to teach, but the reality of today’s classroom makes it completely unbearable for this Texas teacher. She might not even make it until the end of the year.

An encounter with a coddling parent was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Marburger. She took to Facebook to unload her concerns. Responsible parents and fellow teachers can relate to what she had to say.

She wrote,

“I left work early today after an incident with a parent left me unable emotionally to continue for the day. I have already made the decision to leave teaching at the end of this year, and today, I don’t know if I will make it even that long. Parents have become far too disrespectful, and their children are even worse. Administration always seems to err on the side of keeping the parent happy, which leaves me with no way to do the job I was hired to do…teach kids.”

“Unfortunately, one parent today thought it was wrong of me to hold her son accountable for his behavior and decided to very rudely tell me so, in front of her son,” she continued.

The issuing of report cards is a troubling time for this teacher as the parents demand high grades even though their children don’t do the work. Even worse is the fact that parents will complain to the school administration over the grades and the principal often sides with the griping parents!

“Report cards come out later this week, and I have nearly half of my students failing due to multiple (8-10) missing assignments,” Marburger wrote on Facebook. “Most of these students and their parents haven’t seemed to care about this over the past three months, though weekly reports go out, emails have been sent and phone calls have been attempted. But now I’m probably going to spend my entire week next week fielding calls and emails from irate parents, wanting to know why I failed their kid. My administrator will demand an explanation of why I let so many fail without giving them support, even though I’ve done practically everything short of doing the work for them. And behavior in my class will deteriorate even more. I am expecting this, because it is what has happened at the end of every other term thus far.”

Marburger’s post begging parents to teach their children to be respectful and accountable has gone viral with over 400,000 shares. She even shared pictures of children destroying her classroom, including sticking gum on the window, as you can see in the viral post below.

Our schools are in a serious situation thanks to parents who don’t want to teach their children responsibility. As teachers leave the profession, this crisis will become even worse. If a child doesn’t learn respect at a young age, they are going to have a very challenging time in the workforce as adults too. We need to bring back old school parenting!

Share this if you taught your children respect!
