Tim Conway Carol Burnett

One of the funniest things about “The Carol Burnett Show” was how the cast members would make each other laugh. Tim Conway was usually the instigator, but in at least one skit, Carol got her revenge while Tim had a hard time keeping it together.

In a 1978 skit, Conway plays an elderly man whose nurse takes him to the park to get some sunshine. He’s sitting on a bench when a park lady, played by Carol Burnett, sits next to him. She was missing quite a few teeth and would accidentally whistle while she spoke.

Burnett clearly went off script because Conway was having trouble keeping it together while she tells him tales of her previous life as Cleopatra. She tells him about her relationships with Julius Caesar and Atilla the Hun. But, Tim has a hard time keeping a straight face when Carol tells him about having Siamese elephants who were attached by their trunks. Carol was clearly seeking revenge after Conway caused everyone else to laugh during his ad-libbed elephant story.

She then says that in addition to being Cleopatra, Carol Burnett was also Paul Revere’s horse. That story led to police intervention, which you can see in the video below!

Tim Conway had a hard time not laughing. I can’t blame him. I laughed out loud right off the bat when she was whistling while she spoke.

This was when television comedy was just good clean fun – no violence, no overt sex, and no cussing. You could watch with the entire family. The humor was relatable to people of all ages. The only thing you had to worry about was laughing so hard that your side hurt. That’s why “The Carol Burnett Show” is considered one of the best television series of all time.
