ATTENTION: Recall Of More Than 40 Million Fire Extinguishers

Americans and Canadians are urged to check their fire extinguishers after The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of more than 40 million of them on Thursday. This massive recall includes some Kidde extinguisher models that were made between 1973 and August of 2017.

These fire extinguishers have push buttons and plastic handles that can become clogged. Their nozzles can also detach. This massive recall includes 134 models with plastic handles and 8 models with push buttons. They were sold online and in a variety of stores.

A faulty extinguisher likely played a part in the death of Brendan Rosko. The 22-year-old was killed in a Pennsylvania car crash in 2014. The fire extinguishers used by first responders to put out the flames didn’t work.

The USCPSC also referenced 391 reports of Kidde fire extinguishers failing to work. This resulted in sixteen being burned or suffering from smoke inhalation.

The scope of this recall is troublesome. It affects tens of millions of people across the country. Imagine going to use a fire extinguisher and it doesn’t work. Seconds count when you are confronted with a fire. Wasting time with a defective extinguisher can cost you your life.

“You’re better off to have no fire extinguisher than a defective fire extinguisher,” said former California chief fire marshal James McMullen. “If you attack a fire thinking you’re going to put it out with a defective fire extinguisher and it doesn’t work you put yourself in harm’s way.”
