Hollywood is in mourning after the death of the M*A*S*H, Ordinary People, and Hunger Games star Donald Sutherland. He died on Thursday at the age of 88.
Sutherland Dies At 88
Sutherland’s death was announced by his Hollywood star son Kiefer Sutherland of 24 fame.
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” Kiefer wrote on social media. “I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film.”
“Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly,” he continued. “He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Meanwhile, Daily Mail reported that Sutherland’s death was confirmed by reps with his talent agency CAA. The reps said that he died in Miami, Florida.
“A private celebration of life will be held by the family,” CAA rep Missy Davy told People Magazine.

Sutherland’s Life And Career
Sutherland’s career spanned 60 years, and he died with 200 film and television credits to his name, according to IMDB.
Sutherland was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada on July 17, 1935. His mother was a homemaker, and his father worked in sales and electricity.
Sutherland worked as a DJ in high school before later attending college at the University of Toronto. There, he graduated with a double major in engineering and drama. He nearly became an engineer, but he was so in love with acting that he decided to make that his profession.
Sutherland had various small roles in film and television before he got his big break in the 1967 war movie The Dirty Dozen. This film was a huge hit, and Sutherland was able to use its success to get him cast in the 1970 Robert Altman Vietnam War movie M*A*S*H.
The rest, as they say, is history, and Sutherland was one of the most famous actors in the world for the next 50 years of his life. He was an actor who was known for his versatility. Sutherland starred in everything from dramas like Klute (1971) and Ordinary People (1980) to comedies like National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978) to horror films like Don’t Look Now (1973) to action movies like The Hunger Games (2012).

Sutherland’s Awards
Sutherland was also unfortunately known for being one of the most prolific actors to never receive an Oscar nomination. He won two Golden Globe Awards and was nominated seven other times.
Sutherland additionally won an Emmy and was nominated for one BAFTA, which is the British version of the Oscars, but sadly, an Academy Award nomination somehow never came his way. Thankfully, Sutherland was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2018.
Nevertheless, Sutherland will still always be remembered as one of the best actors of all time. Indeed, he will live on forever through his hundreds of television and film appearances.
“It’s hard to think of another actor who’s been as prolific and made films as diverse as Ordinary People, Don’t Look Now, Fellini’s Casanova, Bertolucci’s 1900 and The Hunger Games,” his son Kiefer told The Guardian of his father in 2022.
“His influence was to make my career as diversified and interesting as possible, which he taught me by doing, not by saying, which was really cool,” he continued.
Sutherland is survived by his wife Francine Racette, who he was married to for over 50 years. He’s also survived by his five children.
