Fans were devastated when the final episode of Tom Selleck’s hit show Blue Bloods aired back in December. The CBS drama had been on since 2010, and it was one of the most beloved shows on television for years.
Two months later, fans were overjoyed when it was announced that CBS had confirmed that Blue Bloods is being given a spinoff. The new show will be called Boston Blue, and it’s set to be lead by the former Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg.
Fans had been hoping that Selleck, 80, would be joining Wahlberg on this spinoff. Sadly, it’s just been confirmed that this won’t be happening. Instead, Selleck’s replacement on Boston Blue has been revealed.
Selleck’s Replacement In Blue Bloods Spinoff
Selleck will not be returning as the Reagan family patriarch, NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan. The spinoff series will follow Wahlberg’s character Danny Reagan as he takes a position with the Boston PD.
Rather than focus on the Reagan family, Boston Blue will revolve around the Silver family. The patriarch of this family will be Reverend Peters, and he’ll be played by Ernie Hudson, 79. Since he’ll be the patriarch of the new family that the show will focus on, Hudson will essentially be replacing the role that Selleck had on Blue Bloods.
Reverend Peters is described as “a renowned pastor of an historic Baptist church in Boston.” The character is also an “open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions.”
Reverend Peters is the father of Mae Silver, Boston’s District Attorney. He’s also grandfather to Superintendent Ashley Silver, rookie patrol cop Isaac Silver, and Detective Lena Silver. They will seemingly be the other main characters on Boston Blue. Sonequa Martin-Green has been cast as Lena. No other official cast-members have been announced, however.
“I’m gonna have to get a really good Boston accent, just so I can throw it out at times,” Martin-Green said after her casting was announced. “We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long.”
“Being Detective Lena Silver, who is coming from a prominent law enforcement family, you will love the Silvers too,” she added. “I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in the CBS family.”
Hudson is an experienced character actor who has over 262 IMDB credits to his name. He’s best known for his work in the Ghostbusters franchise. Other well-known films that Hudson has appeared in include Quantum Leap, Carl Weber’s The Family Business, and Miss Congeniality.
Selleck Was ‘Very Open’ To Doing Boston Blue
With all due respect to Hudson, many fans will be disappointed that he’s taking Selleck’s place on this Blue Bloods spinoff. Selleck himself had even made it clear that he was interested in playing a role in the spinoff series.
Back in February, an insider told Closer Weekly that Selleck is “very happy” for Wahlberg that the spinoff is happening.
“They still talk all the time so he’s known about this before almost anyone and he’s been very encouraging,” the source said of Selleck and Wahlberg, 55. “Tom is happy that the network isn’t letting this franchise totally die. He still doesn’t get why it had to end, but he’s had to accept it.”
The insider went on to say that Selleck was “very open” to having a role in the spinoff.
“The details of the show and how much, or how little, Tom will be involved are still all under wraps, but Tom very openly supportive and pleased,” this source concluded.
Sadly, it appears that CBS has decided to go in a completely different direction.

Selleck’s Fight To Save Blue Bloods
Making this even worse is the fact that Selleck was left devastated by CBS’s decision to cancel Blue Bloods. In fact, he spent much of last year desperately trying to save the show.
“I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” Tom told Variety in December. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”

We can only hope that CBS reconsiders and doesn’t replace Selleck entirely. In the end, if we’re going to watch a Blue Bloods spinoff, we want it to include Frank Reagan and Tom Selleck!
