It’s no secret that the former Magnum P.I. star Tom Selleck has been having a rough go of it in Hollywood as of late.
Last year, CBS cancelled his long-running police procedural drama Blue Bloods. Selleck, 80, starred in 293 episodes of the beloved show from 2010 until the series finale aired in December of 2024.
Just two months later, CBS announced that it had green-lit a Blue Bloods spinoff called Boston Blue. The new show will star Selleck’s Blue Bloods co-star Donnie Wahlberg, 55. It is set to premiere in the fall.
Last month, fans were devastated to learn that Selleck would not be starring in the spinoff. Instead, his character’s archetype has been replaced by the former Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson, 79.
Thankfully, Selleck has just gotten some much-needed good news on this front. Indeed, insiders are saying that Wahlberg is preparing to go to bat for him in a big way.
Wahlberg To Fight For Selleck
“Donnie is an old-school loyal guy, he’s going to fight for Tom to get a piece of the action,” an insider told Closer Weekly. “He and Tom are still very close, they talk all the time and Donnie is well aware that Tom was not happy about Blue Bloods getting canceled.”
“Tom isn’t leaning on him or demanding anything of him, he’s got a movie in the works and is way too proud to beg,” the source added. “But Donnie wants to do this for him, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because he loves working with Tom.”
Blue Bloods followed the fictional Reagan family, many of whom worked for the NYPD. Selleck’s character Frank Reagan was the patriarch of the family and the NYPD commissioner. Meanwhile, Frank’s eldest son Danny (Wahlberg) was an NYPD detective.
Boston Blue is set to follow Wahlberg’s character Danny as he takes a position with the Boston PD. The spinoff is set to premiere this fall. Like Blue Bloods, it will air on Friday nights. Boston Blue will star Wahlberg and Hudson along with Sonequa Martin-Green and Maggie Lawson. Despite everything that has happened, fans are still hoping that Selleck will appear in it as well.
“They have such a special bond, it really is a family feeling and Donnie misses seeing him,” the source concluded. “He is feeling confident he can make it happen because the fans would love it as well. Even if Tom isn’t a full-time character, he can at least pop in and out for regular cameos, that would probably be a good fit for him at this point in life anyway.”
Selleck Is Interested In Doing Boston Blue
Earlier this year, another source said that Selleck would be open to appearing in Boston Blue.
“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” this insider said back in February. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”
This source went on to say that Selleck and Wahlberg developed a close friendship during the fourteen years that they starred on Blue Bloods together.
“They are still very close, over the nearly 15 years they worked together they developed such a fantastic relationship,” the insider explained. “They’re genuine friends, in a lot of ways they grew to be like family, that’s how bonded they were.”
“They both got emotional filming their last dinner scene on Blue Bloods because it was the last, but now that this series is happening, they may get to do another,” the source continued. “It’s set in Boston so it won’t be a regular family dinner thing like on the last show but there’s the potential and Tom would be all for doing it.”

Selleck Tried To Save Blue Bloods
Selleck was left devastated when CBS cancelled Blue Bloods last year. Indeed, he spent much of 2024 desperately trying to save the show.
“I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” Selleck told Variety in December. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”

Blue Bloods was long one of the only shows on television that promoted both family values and law enforcement. We can only hope that Boston Blue does the same thing.
Here’s hoping that Wahlberg is successful in getting Selleck on Blue Bloods. In the end, no Blue Bloods spinoff would be the same without Tom Selleck!
