Ever since its 1997 release, “Titanic” fans have wondered why Rose couldn’t have found room for Jack on the door she waited on until she was rescued from the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Many of us felt personally invested in this couple and hated to see Jack die in the cold water after surviving the ship’s sinking. Was it possible for them both to have survived? Well, on the “MythBusters“ Titanic episode, the show’s hosts look to solve a mystery that has been bothering fans of the film for years.
In the movie, Jack selflessly sacrifices his life so Rose can be on the door, but many of us thought there would have been room for both of them. It appears those people who questioned if Jack really had to die were actually right this whole time!
MythBusters Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage tried to get up on a door that was similar to the one in the film. It was a challenging thing to manage as the door would wobble and throw one of them off. With some patience, they both got in the door, but one huge problem remained.
The door kept them both afloat, but their combined weight still had them in the water. Rose and Jack could not have both survived an hour in the icy water while waiting to be rescued.
After initially failing to stay on the door without getting wet, Jamie and Adam came up with a brilliant idea that could have saved both Jack and Rose!
Rose had a lifejacket on while in the icy water. That lifejacket could be strapped to the bottom of the door, creating added buoyancy. The MythBusters gave this a try. This simple modification kept them both out of the water, proving that Jack could have survived.
They presented their evidence to Titanic director James Cameron and informed him that he killed Jack for no good reason! You can watch this myth being busted and Cameron’s reaction to it in the video below!
The water was freezing and both Jack and Rose were under extreme stress. Would they have been able to accomplish this if it happened in real life? It’s hard to tell.
A video of Rose’s rescue is below. Now imagine them both being rescued together!
