Casey Fischer is a college student and mother of a beautiful baby girl. Recently, on an ordinary trip to Dunkin’ Donuts, something happened that she will never forget.

Approaching the store, she noticed a homeless man on the side of the road who appeared to be begging for change. Once she was inside, the man came in and counted some loose change he had in his hand to pay for food.

When she realized he only had about a dollar, Casey bought his bagel and invited him to sit and eat with her.

That’s when Casey learned that everyone has a story.

“I wanted to kill myself today”

The man’s name was Chris, she learned. He didn’t know who his father was, his mother had died of cancer, and he was addicted to drugs. Chris said that because he was homeless, people were often unkind to him.

They just sat there and chatted as Casey went out of her way to befriend the man.

After a while, Casey said she had to return to class and the man asked her to wait momentarily. Then Chris pulled out a crumpled receipt and began writing on it.

When he handed her the message, it read:

“I wanted to kill myself today. Because of u I now do not. Thank u, beautiful person.”

She was floored, and shared the experience on Facebook:

The post went viral. So many were touched by it. How could you not be?

“This lovely man’s name was Chris and Chris was one of the most honest & sincere people I’ve ever met,” Casey wanted the world to know.

We could all show more love toward our neighbors, especially the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Casey Fischer is an example to us all.

Most importantly, if it had not been for her kindness, how might have things turned out?

Will you make a point to help someone this week, big or small?
