Ryan Gosling Stars in the New Star Wars Starfighter The Walt Disney Company

Star Wars is one of the biggest science fiction franchises in the world right now, and rightly so, thanks to its various movies, shows, video games, board games, and more. And another installment is on its way to the theaters in May 2027. But in this one, Ryan Gosling stars in the new Star Wars: Starfighter, and this is everything we know so far about the movie.

Ryan Gosling has had some impressive roles lately. The actor is most known for his roles in La La Land (2016), Drive (2011), The Nice Guys (2016), and Barbie (2013). But he’s also familiar with the science fiction genre from Blade Runner 2049 (2017), First Man (2018), and his upcoming 2026 film Project Hail Mary.

And now, Ryan Gosling is teaming up with the Star Wars franchise in his lead role in the new standalone film Star Wars: Starfighter. Directed by Shawn Levy, who also directed Deadpool & Wolverine, the news surprised and excited fans. The news was dropped at the Star Wars Celebration 2025 three-day event in Tokyo, Japan.

“One of those rumors I heard that I do need to dispel is, I had heard at one point that my movie was going to star Ryan Gosling, and believe me, that would be a dream come true for me. So today, I just wanted to tell you here in this room that that rumor is 100% true,” Levy said on stage before the iconic actor joined him.

Gosling expressed how excited he was to join the franchise, sharing a picture of his Star Wars bedsheets from when he was 5, saying “As you can see from the picture, you know, I guess I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the film, and it’s probably framed my idea of what a movie even was.”

Gosling went on saying, “But all of that aside, I think the reality is that this script is just so good. It has a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure. And there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn [Levy]. So it’s something I just really, really wanted to do.”
