Bugonia will be the fourth collaboration between Stone and Lanthimos, 51, who previously worked on The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and Kinds of Kindness (2024).
“Two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth,” reads the synopsis.
The film is a remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet. Jerry Kyoungboun Ko, another producer on the film, speaks about the movie, saying, “I am thrilled to introduce an intriguing story rooted in Korean Cinema’s hidden gem, in collaboration with the ideal team of talent and producers, alongside the reliable studio. I expect that Yorgos will ignite a dynamic chemical fusion with his unique style and the novelty of the narrative.”

Lanthimos is known for exploring surreal and often dystopian themes that center around power dynamics and societal conformity. That is seen in the trailer for Bugonia, focusing on themes of environmental decay. The trailer begins with an emphasis on the bee metaphor, where worker bees spend their lives gathering pollen for their queen, all while they’re dying to do just that. The kidnappers then seek to reclaim control.
The film will be available to see in theaters for a limited time on October 24, followed by a wide expansion on October 31.
