What is Project Hail Mary About?

Project Hail Mary is a film adaptation of the bestselling 2021 Andy Weir novel of the same name. It follows middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) as he is tasked with the unthinkable.

Several stars, including the sun, are dying, and Ryland is suddenly needed for his doctorate in molecular biology. When discussing the mission to travel 11.9 light-years away to a star not affected by the contaminant, Ryland stresses his inexperience with space, stating, “I put the ‘not’ in ‘astronaut!’ I’ve never done anything [space-related] — I can’t even moonwalk!”

Mission leader Eva Stratt (Hüller) is the one who eventually convinces him, saying, “If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct. You are my solution.”

Sent into space, Ryland must figure out what is causing the stars to die except for one, and he meets a friend along the way, in the form of an extraterrestrial being, Rocky.

In the trailer, Ryland says, “So, I met an alien. He’s kinda growing on me. At least he’s not growing in me, which was a concern for a little while.

Leading Cast Members

The two leading cast members we meet in the trailer are Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller.

While Gosling appears as a sixth-grade science teacher, Hüller is the leader of the Hail Mary project and convinces Gosling’s character to launch himself into space to save humanity.

Past projects for Gosling include Barbie and The Fall Guy, while Hüller recently appeared in Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest.

When asked about the film at CinemaCon, Gosling stated, “It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that’s kind of our bag. This is why we go to the movies. And I’m not just saying that because I’m in it. I’m also saying it because I’m a producer on the film.”
