Splitting the Production into Two Films
Sometimes, having more is just better.
Screenwriter Winnie Holzman and several other members of the production team decided to split the Wicked adaptation into two movies after several “long conversations.”
She later said, “We wanted the fun, and the whole artistic fulfillment of being able to make these movies was to be able to explore our story and our characters with a little bit more depth.”
Success of the First Wicked Film
Premiering on the same day as Gladiator II, Wicked stunned the box office. The film grossed $114 million across North American theaters in the first few days of screenings.
For weeks after, the film continued to bring in hundreds of millions internationally, ending with a total of $756 million at the worldwide box office. The film is the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation ever and Universal’s third biggest movie of all time.
In awards season, Wicked received 10 Oscar nominations, snatching two wins for costume design and production design.
