What is The Lost Bus About?

The Lost Bus is based on a true story during California’s 2018 Camp Fire, one of America’s deadliest wildfires. It focuses on a wayward school bus driver (McConaughey) and a dedicated school teacher (Ferrera) as they try to save 22 children from the encroaching fires.

The Lost Bus Teaser

While The Lost Bus teaser may be short, it sets the scene for an action-packed film.

In the teaser, a dispatcher can be heard on a walkie-talkie: “There’s a situation at Ponderosa Elementary. There are 23 kids who are stranded. Is there anybody in the area that can pick them up?”

McConaughey’s character Kevin can be seen debating whether to answer the call, eventually lifting up his walkie-talkie.

Later, there is a clip of a school bus driving through the wildfire’s blaze.

Writers and Producers

The film is based on Lizzie Johnson’s fact-based novel Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive and American Wildfire, which details California’s deadliest fire ever.

The screenplay is by Paul Greengrass and Brad Ingelsby.

Ingelsby, Gregory Goodman, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, and Jamie Lee Curtis for Comet Pictures are producing the movie. Johnson serves as an executive producer.

Curtis had the idea for the project after hearing Lizzie Johnson on NPR and brought the project to Blumhouse, where she has a first-look deal.

Commenting on the film, Greengrass shared this statement:

The Lost Bus is the story of quiet heroism — of people coming together in the face of the unthinkable. I’m honored to have been entrusted with this story.”
