Desperate people often take desperate actions. In the case of one asylum-seeker from Myanmar, those actions were insane and appear to be terrorism.
A man named Nur Islam was not happy with how long he had to wait to withdraw the balance of his account from an Australian bank. Instead of waiting, he went down to a gas station and returned to the bank with gasoline. He poured it inside the bank and customers tried to flee. Australia gave him refuge. He repaid that kindness by causing a tremendous amount of damage and harm to innocent people.
Islam then used a cigarette lighter to ignite it. Covered in flames, Islam ran to the back of the bank, terrifying everyone there and creating widespread panic. Islam’s actions injured 29 people, including four seriously. The fire, which you can see in the video below, caused around $3 million in damage. (Warning: Footage may be upsetting to some)
Islam was in Australia on a bridging Visa. Sixty percent of his body was burned from the arson which he said was done “in order to get back” at the bank for taking too long for a withdrawal.
An Australian Magistrate has decided that Islam will face trial for this horrific attack on the bank and the innocent people inside. 29 people are forever affected by his terrorizing actions.
