An eight-year-old Detroit boy who spent most of his life homeless cried tears of joy when he got his first bed. After his mom lost her job, the pair moved from one homeless shelter to another as they were displaced.

Daeyrs didn’t wish for much. He only wanted a bed of his own. After years in crisis, his mother Dionna became a trainee nurse and got state housing. Even though they didn’t have money to furnish their home, they were happy to have a place of their own. However, they only had a blowup mattress and some chairs in the house. The young boy slept in a nest of blankets.

Their social worker contacted Humble Design to see if the charity would provide furnishings for this family. Rather than providing Dionne and Daeyrs with a handful of items, they completely furnished the home with donated items from their warehouse.

A video was taken on December 20th of the family seeing their furnished home for the first time. The boy who only wished for a bed had his bedroom completely made up. He covers his eyes before walking into his room. When he sees what these generous people have done, he gets incredibly emotional. The boy was completely filled with gratitude. You can see the heartwarming moment in the video below.

“Seeing how much having a bed and his own room meant to Daeyrs, it really made me realize what’s important in life and grateful for everything I have,” Humble Design’s Treger Strasburg said. “He was so excited to have his own room, but also so overwhelmed by what having this really means for him after all he’s been through – to have a place to stay and just be a normal kid with no worries.

What a tear jerker! Imagine what that boy has been through and what a bed of his own must mean to him. There are so many people who would be thankful to just have a bed. It’s important to be grateful for all that we have!
