A runaway bus rigged by a terrorist to blow up if it goes too slow in L.A. traffic.
Just read that again. It’s genius. That’s Speed, starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper, and Jeff Daniels. Released in 1994, it was a huge hit, and also somehow a cult hit.
We’ll get to Speed 2: Cruise Control, but first, the big news: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock are both game for a Speed 3 film, which would be awesome.
Remember how fun this movie was?

Speed 3
On a podcast called “50 MPH” Reeves was more than enthusiastic about the possibility of making a new Speed film.
Even better, is that Sandra Bullock is down, too.
“I mean, you know — we’d freakin’ knock it out of the park,” Reeves said. Bullock added, “Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe. Are we on little scooters at Disneyland?”
OK so Bullock wasn’t as gung-ho about Speed 3 in particular, but if that’s what Keanu wanted and a studio was willing to make it? Game on!
So what would be the premise? Let’s run down a few possibilities.
Speed 2: Cruise Control
Bullock headed up the sequel in 1997, along with the excellent Jason Patric, but the film was a major flop.
The premise was the same, only with a giant boat. Instead of Hopper playing the terrorist, it’s Willem Dafoe.

It…. wasn’t good. Besides being a box office bomb, the film was nominated for eight – count them eight – Golden Raspberry Awards.
OK, so we have a boat and a bus. What’s next?
Possible Speed 3 Scenarios
So we know the formula: a terrorist has rigged a vehicle to blow up if it goes too slow. We’ve already done the bus in L.A. traffic, and a boat headed towards an oil rig.
Let’s get this one out of the way: runaway train! What could be better? It’s on a track so the destinations are limited. It’s massive and would cause major damage to anything it hits. It could be carrying dangerous loads of chemicals, or a bomb, or really anything that’s deadly.
What about a semi-truck? Instead of heavy city traffic, it could be set in Appalachia, around winding mountain roads.
For a different style of movie, we could go with a motorcycle. This would be a super action and stunts-heavy flick – with Reeves and Bullock having to needle their way through traffic, perhaps up mountain hills, you name it.
The ultimate? A run-away airplane. This one is obvious, but also sensitive since it will inevitably harken back memories of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Totally out-there proposal: Do a mash-up with Stephen King’s The Long Walk. The premise there is similar – contestants have to walk. Non-stop. Above a certain speed. If they fall behind the speed, they are shot. Simple as that: keep walking. But with Keanu and Sandra.
What do you think? How would Speed 3 end up?
