Fraser has made a famous comeback in recent years, with his last appearance being in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale (2022), which won him an Academy Award. Before that, he’s best known for starring in the fantasy adventure series The Mummy (1999). He was also a supportive role in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). But what should you know about the upcoming comedy drama?

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hikari’s Rental Family has received a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. The film follows a struggling actor in Tokyo who takes a job at a “rental family” agency, playing stand-in familial roles for clients.

In addition to Fraser playing the leading role, the movie also stars Takehiro Hira and Mari Yamamoto. The trailer for the movie suggests it will be a charming and quirky comedy which tugs at the heartstrings while having dramatic moments.

While the quirky story is the perfect setup for hilarious moments, it will also deeply explore the sense of belonging, identity, and emotional labor of these roles. This will be a deep dive into the Japanese rental family phenomenon — where people pay strangers to fulfill familial roles — which will seem foreign to Western audiences but still speaks on loneliness that is worldwide.
