The script was co-written by Cooper, Arnett, and Mark Chappell, known for See How They Run. And according to Cooper, the movie is “not a midlife crisis—it’s a midlife catharsis.”

“Sometimes you realize you’re coasting and you’ve lost your rudder and your North Star in life, and that takes a toll on whoever is in your orbit.”

The movie follows Arnett and Dern, who play a middle-aged couple on the verge of divorce; while he finds new purpose in the New York comedy scene, she reflects on her place in their family and ponders her own future.

Cooper teasts that “the film aims to pull audiences into the subculture of the New York comedy scene.” Apparently, Arnett did weeks of stand-up comedy to prepare for his character, and Dern even spoke with former professional athletes, as her character is a former Olympic-level volleyball player.

This dedication and behind-the-scenes stories will hopefully be worthwhile for Bradley Cooper’s new comedy movie.
