After the newest movie starring Sydney Sweeney flopped, having one of the all-time worst box office openings, Ruby Rose made sure her voice was heard on the matter.
Ruby Rose slams Sydney Sweeney for ruining Christy, the recent sports biopic that follows Christy Martin, the trailblazing professional boxer. On November 10, the Orange Is the New Black alum blamed Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, fully for the lack of success that the movie had.
“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing,” Rose wrote on Threads on November 11. “I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”

The actor, who’s also openly lesbian, condemned the comments Sweeney made following the low box office news. Sweeney talked about how proud she was of telling Martin’s story on Instagram, saying that “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And christy has been the most impactful project of my life.”
Ruby Rose responded to that comment, saying, “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people.’ None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us.”
This isn’t the only controversy that Sweeney has been a part of. Back in August, Sweeney took part in a controversial American Eagle jeans ad campaign, and just recently dismissed the claims that it encouraged white supremacy and eugenics. Around the same time, the Guardian reported that Sweeney was registered as a Republican voter in Florida, causing even more of a stir amongst viewers.
“You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period,” Rose concluded. “Christy deserved better.”
While Ruby Rose had some intense opinions on the matter, many fans have been divided on their thoughts about these remarks. Some are with Rose, saying that “She kinda nailed it though with no one wants to see someone who hates us parading around pretending to be one of us.”
However, others believe that Ruby Rose is bitter about losing the role and is attacking Sweeney. Some fans are saying “Maybe aim that hate at whoever did casting and not your competition.” Another commenter added, “I don’t think Sydney Sweeney is a bad actress. I don’t think she’s a great actress, either. But the key is that I haven’t seen enough of her roles to have a strong opinion. But Ruby Rose is definitely bad at acting.”
Earlier this year, Christy Martin herself praised Sweeney’s performance in the biopic at the film’s world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival in September.
“I think that’s why Sydney Sweeney’s doing such an awesome job because she got to be this totally different person that none of you expected,” Christy told the audience. “She wasn’t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy in this movie, and I think it’s awesome. I mean, she kicked ass.”
