Yesterday, we reported that Tom Selleck’s replacement in the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue had been revealed to be the former Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson. He will star in the new show alongside Selleck’s former Blue Bloods co-star Donnie Wahlberg.

While Selleck, 80, has appeared to be supportive of the Blue Bloods spinoff, insiders are now saying that he’s actually “livid” about it. Now, Selleck reportedly wants revenge for cancelling his beloved show and replacing it with a spinoff, as he believes “ageism” is at play here. It should be noted that Wahlberg is 25 years Selleck’s junior at 55 years of age.

Selleck Is ‘Livid’ – Wants Revenge

“Tom is considering suing CBS for ageism over cancelling Blue Bloods and spinning it off,” an insider told Daily Mail. “He is absolutely livid about it, especially as ratings were strong when it was cancelled.”

Indeed, millions of people watched Blue Bloods every Friday night from 2010 until 2024. The show followed the fictional Reagan family, many of whom worked for the NYPD. Selleck’s character Frank Reagan was the patriarch of the family and the NYPD commissioner. Meanwhile, Frank’s eldest son Danny (Wahlberg) was an NYPD detective.

Selleck was left devastated when CBS cancelled Blue Bloods last year, with the final episode airing on December 13. In February, CBS announced the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue. It will follow Wahlberg’s character Danny as he takes a position with the Boston PD. The spinoff is set to premiere this fall. Like Blue Bloods, it will air on Friday nights.

Selleck Feels ‘Screwed’ Over By CBS

Fans are desperate for Selleck to appear in Boston Blue. However, Selleck is said to still be too bitter to do so, as he feels “screwed” over by CBS.

“Donnie would like to get everyone back to make cameos, including Tom – but he is still angry that Blue Bloods was cancelled,” a second source said. “If Tom was asked to play his character again, he would probably say no because he is so mad with CBS. He wouldn’t want CBS to benefit, since he feels they screwed him over.”

Instead, Hudson, 79, will be replacing Selleck as the new series patriarch. He will play Reverend Peters, the patriarch of the Silver family. Reverend Peters is described as “a renowned pastor of an historic Baptist church in Boston.” The character is also an “open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions.”

Reverend Peters is the father of Mae Silver, Boston’s District Attorney. He’s also grandfather to Superintendent Ashley Silver, rookie patrol cop Isaac Silver, and Detective Lena Silver. They will seemingly be the other main characters on Boston Blue, along with Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan. Sonequa Martin-Green has been cast as Lena. No other official cast-members have been announced, however.

Wahlberg Weighs In

As for Wahlberg, he is hoping that Selleck will change his mind about appearing in the spinoff. He would like the new show to serve as a way for Selleck to recover from the devastation of Blue Bloods being cancelled.

“Donnie has become so close with Tom and is supportive of all his decisions,” this insider said. “But Donnie has also turned a sad situation upside down for Tom with Boston Blue.”

“Donnie felt the need to have his character live on for his fans and hopes this show has the same success,” the source continued. “He fought for the show to continue going because they didn’t tie things up and left a lot unanswered. Tom and everyone else knows that they are welcome on the spin-off.”

Selleck’s Fight To Save Blue Bloods

However, it’s easy to see why Selleck is still so hurt by the cancellation of Blue Bloods. Indeed, he spent much of 2024 desperately trying to save the show.

“I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” Tom told Variety in December. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”

Only time will tell if Selleck follows through with his plan to get revenge on CBS for cancelling Blue Bloods. In the end, CBS may just learn the hard way that messing with the former Magnum P.I. star was a very bad idea!
