Last month, we reported that CBS has officially green-lit a spinoff of the hit show Blue Bloods called Boston Blue. The show will star Donnie Wahlberg, who will be playing his Blue Bloods character Danny Reagan.

Now, insiders are saying that Wahlberg, 55, is extremely “loyal” to his former Blue Bloods co-star Tom Selleck, 80. It remains to be seen if Selleck will have a role in Boston Blue, as he played the fictional NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods for fourteen years.

Wahlberg’s Bond With Selleck

“Over the decade they worked together they formed a very tight bond, they were a family,” an insider told Closer Weekly. “That doesn’t just go away because the show is cancelled.”

Wahlberg and Selleck starred together on Blue Bloods from 2010 until December of 2024. During that time, they became incredibly close.

“Tom still speaks to Donnie several times a week and the same with Bridget,” the source continued, referring to the Blue Bloods star Bridget Moynahan. “They both respect him so much and love getting his advice on things and they’re also very protective of him, they worry.”

Blue Bloods Cast Worried About Selleck

Wahlberg and the rest of the Blue Bloods cast have been worried about Selleck since the show ended. Indeed, Selleck has been open about struggling to come to terms with CBS cancelling Blue Bloods.

“They know that working and being a part of the show gave him such a purpose, not to mention the paycheck, so they do fret about him being out of sorts now that it’s over. As soon as Donnie got news that he was getting a spin-off he called Tom, he was one of the first people he wanted to talk to,” the insider added. “He let him know there will be a place for him to do walk-ons and cameos if he so chooses, it’s really a case where the ball is in Tom’s court because Donnie is a loyal and true blue guy, having Tom come on is a given.”

Another insider previously told Closer Weekly that Selleck is “very happy” for Wahlberg about securing the Blue Bloods spinoff.

“They still talk all the time so he’s known about this before almost anyone and he’s been very encouraging,” that source stated. “Tom is happy that the network isn’t letting this franchise totally die. He still doesn’t get why it had to end, but he’s had to accept it.”

Selleck Interested In Doing Boston Blue

In the months since Blue Bloods ended, Selleck has reportedly been enjoying a quieter life with his wife Jillie Mack. They live on a 63-acre avocado ranch in Ventura County, California. That being said, Selleck is still reportedly eager to play some role in the spinoff series.

“It’s also no secret that Tom gets a little stir crazy when he’s just stuck home all the time, even with their huge property,” the insider explained. “Jillie is an actor too, she gets it and loves to see Tom thriving.”

“The details of the show and how much, or how little, Tom will be involved are still all under wraps, but Tom very openly supportive and pleased,” this source concluded.

Blue Bloods was one of the few shows on television that celebrated both law enforcement and family values. That’s why we’re glad that it’s getting a spinoff. Here’s hoping that Selleck will be part of it, and that he and Wahlberg will soon reunite onscreen!
