Earlier this week, we reported that CBS has officially green-lit a spinoff of the hit show Blue Bloods that will be called Boston Blue.

As most of our readers know by now, Tom Selleck has just been dying to either save Blue Bloods or get a spinoff going. Now, with this news, the Selleck can’t help but celebrate!

Tom ‘Very Happy’ About Blue Bloods Spinoff

An insider told Closer Weekly that Tom, 80, is “very happy” for his onscreen son Donnie Wahlberg, who will be starring in the spinoff series as his Blue Bloods character Danny Reagan.

Danny plays the son of the commish, Frank Reagan, on the original show.

“They still talk all the time so he’s known about this before almost anyone and he’s been very encouraging,” the source said of Tom and Donnie, 55. “Tom is happy that the network isn’t letting this franchise totally die. He still doesn’t get why it had to end, but he’s had to accept it.”

The final episode of Blue Bloods aired back in December. Tom starred in all 293 episodes of Blue Bloods, which had been on the air since 2010. In the months since its cancellation, Tom has reportedly been enjoying a quieter life with his wife Jillie Mack on their 63-acre avocado ranch in Ventura County, California.

Still, he has been very open about his desire to continue working.

Tom ‘Very Open’ To Appearing In Boston Blue

That being said, Tom is still reportedly eager to play some role in the spinoff series.

“It’s also no secret that Tom gets a little stir crazy when he’s just stuck home all the time, even with their huge property,” the insider explained. “Jillie is an actor too, she gets it and loves to see Tom thriving.”

“The details of the show and how much, or how little, Tom will be involved are still all under wraps, but Tom very openly supportive and pleased,” this source concluded.

Boston Blue will reportedly follow Donnie’s character Danny Reagan as he moves to a new position. He will allegedly be leaving New York to join the Boston PD, where he will be partnered with Detective Lena Peters, “the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

Fans Weigh In

While fans have expressed their excitement about the reboot, they’ve also made it clear that they want Tom’s character Frank Reagan to be a part of it.

“Danny and his new show all the success but this is not Blue Bloods without Commissioner Tom Selleck,” one fan wrote on social media. Another added, “Is Tom Selleck being cast in the spinoff of Blue Bloods? Or just Donnie Wahlberg?”

“Aww Tom Selleck was heartbroken when blue bloods got canceled,” a third fan commented. “Hopefully he’s on this show.”

Tom was indeed left devastated by CBS’s decision to cancel Blue Bloods. In fact, he spent much of last year desperately trying to save the show.

“I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” Tom told Variety in December. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”

We can only hope that Tom will play a role in the Blue Bloods spinoff. In the end, no spinoff of Blue Bloods would be complete without his iconic Frank Reagan!
