The Oscar-winning Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey is being praised as a “Southern gentleman” for a touching gesture he made towards Kate Middleton and Prince William when they all attended the Wimbledon final on Sunday.

Matthew Makes Classy Move For Royals

Matthew, 55, was in the royal box with his wife Camila Alves, 42, as Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz in four sets to take the Wimbledon title. As Kate, 43, and William, 42, arrived in the box, Matthew could be seen behind them. Much to the joy of royal fans everywhere, Matthew stood up as they made their way to their seats as a sign of respect.

The clip of Matthew’s gesture immediately went viral on social media. One fan shared a clip of it along with the caption, “Matthew McConaughey standing to applaud the Prince & Princess of Wales. What a lovely southern gentleman.”

According to Etiquette School Of New York, only British people are required to bow and curtsy to royals. There are no rules requiring Americans to do so. That just makes it all the more classy that the Texas-born Matthew decided to pay his respects to the royals anyway!

“McConaughey surely respects everyone he encounters…” one fan commented. Another added, “Real class… Beautiful family and prayers for princess Kate to stay healthy after all she’s been through. She’s so beautiful…”

“Don’t forget perfectly dress for the occasion… He’s a gentleman… Matthew was raised right,” a third fan wrote. “Always something I have always admired.”

Kate, William, Matthew, And More Attend Wimbledon

Kate and William were joined at the Wimbledon final by their oldest two children Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 10. Meanwhile, others in the royal box included the actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. The former tennis star Andre Agassi was in the royal box as well.

Matthew and Camila had also attended the Wimbledon women’s final the day before, watching Iga Swiatek handily defeat Amanda Anismova 6-0 6-0. Kate attended that final without the rest of her family, instead sitting next to the tennis legend Billie Jean King.

Kate is the royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She has been a regular at Wimbledon ever since she married William in 2011. Indeed, despite how busy she is, Kate has rarely missed a Wimbledon final in the years since then.

Kate presented the winners and runners-up trophies after both the finals. On Saturday, Kate was praised for comforting Amanda Anisimova. The American couldn’t help but cry at her trophy ceremony after her brutal loss.

“Keep your head high,” Kate was seen telling her.

Kate’s ‘Rollercoaster’ Cancer Recovery

Many were happy to see Kate attend Wimbledon, as this came after her “rollercoaster” recovery from cancer. She spent much of last year battling an unspecified form of the disease. Though she’s now in remission, Kate has been open about just how grueling her cancer treatments were.

“You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,'” Kate said earlier this month. “But actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.”

“You have to find your new normal and that takes time…and it’s a rollercoaster, it’s not smooth, like you expect it to be,” she added. “But the reality is you go through hard times.”
